Sorry but I really have to rant!!!!!

So Im taking a year off from medical school for research at the NIH and decided to apply to the MD/PhD program offered through the NIH graduate partnership programs (Cambridge /Oxford) and i ALSO APPLIED TO my home MD/Phd program.

The GPP requires 3 letters of recc with a deadline Jan. 1st,so I asked 2 of my college PIs and my current PI for letter. My home program required 2 letters deadline January 20th,so i asked 1 of my college PIs and my current PI for a letter.

My college PIs (both PhDs) were thrilled to write letter but my current PI..an MD who runs a lab and a clinic...was not very supportive initially. He told me at the time that he did not think the PhD was necessary and it was a waste of time as I could still run a lab and clinic effectively as an MD only. He said he had "applied to an MSTP program during his time but did not get into a good one" so he did not do it and does not see the need for it???

But I convinced him I was enjoying reasearch and was very intersted in working towards a PhD and that if he was willing, a letter from him would be very helpfull. He then aggreed to write me 'a good letter' . So, he said...oh just email my secretary the information and Ill get the letter to them when im done. The secretary agreed to let me know when it was complete and sent.

Well the deadline was January 1st for the GPP schools and Janurary 20th for my home school. He never sent the Janurary 1st letters!!!
I emailed his secretary to find out what was going on. Well his secretary said she had reminded him but he did not turn in a letter to her as he said he would.

I emailed him directly and politely said that the deadline was January 1st and that I can email the cordinators of the GPP to see if theyll accept a letter with an addedum addressing the problem. I DID NOT RECIEVE A REPLY FROM HIM............

Its been 2 days and dude has not even said..."I dont feel comfortable writing this"...or "I am busy"....or even 'go to hell' will suffice at this point. It sucks because I only have these 3 research mentors to pick from. The 2 college mentors did their thing but my current mentor didnt. Now its too late to even begin to ask anyone else for the Ox/Cam program!

Fortunately, for my home institution, I contacted the other college PI to see if he could write send in a letter in place of my current PI and he sent the letter within hours of contacting him!

I dont even know where to begin....i know he was not really supportive about the MD/PhD idea but he AGREED to write a good letter and now he never sent it before the deadline and he wont respond to my emails to see if we could still turn it in or fix the situation somehow. I dont even know if I should bring it up with him anymore or just ignore it since my home school app is complete but what should i say to him...........he has managed to f* up my OxCam application.

I am so pissed off!!!!!!😡

Sorry to hear about this! The good news is that I had a similar problem and the schools were great about it.

Long story short - two of three of my evaluators didn't send in the recommendations on time. I got an email from one school about two weeks after they were due and they were just like "oh just send them over now" and I called up the other school and they just said to send them on over. And I got an interview at the first school, so I really don't think it was a biggie.
