Hi,

I just had some questions about the "head and neck" on the exam.

In my school, we never had a theme about it. There's no specific section in First Aid either, and none of the sources I am using will cover it except World.

So, is this stuff I have basically learned in bits and pieces of other subjects but WORLD just gave it its own subject designation?

If this is new stuff, is UWORLD sufficient enough to teach me (essentially from scratch) about this subject?

If not, where do I get the best Rapid Review Head and Neck ??? (that's what she said!!!)

Thanks!

Head and Neck is definitely one of the most important topics tested on Step1 Anatomy. I suggest you buy Kaplan's Anatomy textbook. With Kaplan's Head and Neck plus Neuroanatomy, you would cover a major portion of the course content.

Uworld is NOT supposed to act as a substitute for textbooks! However you would learn a lot, but in bits and pieces, from uworld especially regarding the MRIs, and the brain gross sections.

Kaplan is more than enough to cover so go study it 👍

What do we specifically mean by head and neck? Is this just anatomy and lesions?

Reading some random Kaplan book seems pretty silly to me.

I got a question wrong the other day on identifying the Smooth ER.

So now I'm spending the next week reading Ross Histology.

LOL. That's probably more high yield than Kaplan's Head and Neck anatomy book.

There is no "head and neck" anatomy book by Kaplan. There is a single anatomy book that covers this as a section.

You can keep your brilliant advice for yourself if you have little idea about it yourself 🙂

What do you really want to know about the head and neck? Its not really an organ system or anything, so books aren't going to give it its own section. There are specific things that go wrong in the head/neck related to particular diseases and you will see those symptoms discussed in relation to the particular disease. A lot of neurology could be considered head and neck since the brain is obviously in your head and a lot of that material you will find in the neurology section of First Aid. If you are worried about cranial nerves, how the senses work (sight, smell, taste, hearing, vestibular system) etc. you could use High Yield neuroanatomy. You absolutely should not waste your time learning a bunch of superficial head and neck anatomy that is not in First Aid, and certainly do NOT try to find a whole book on it (although Netter does make one, my g/f has it for dental school, but please don't buy it!!).

Some important H and N topics that immediately come to my mind are the thyroid, cranial nerves, and the parotid. The head and neck section in the Kaplan Anatomy Lecture notes is decent. You might find it useful if you have time for it.

yeah so basically i've already essentially "covered" whats in the head and neck part in WORLD probably from other sources. that's all i was wondering because I've heard people say they've had specific themes for this and thought there could be a lot more in depth pathology or something. thanks for the responses.

Def make sure you know what every branchial arch, pouch and cleft becomes.. thats like an insane board favorite
