I was looking on Salary.com and it said the median salary for a Head of Anesth. is $187K. Could that be correct? Seems low. 😕

two things about salary.com -

1) it uses old information from "compensation consultants" based on employer reports.... Now it is very difficult to find out the real salary of a physician because contracts are private for the most part, and often have many components that aren't easy to properly quantify (relocation/school debt management/low-interest mortgage loans)...

2) it uses an averaged national average and then uses a "geographical salary equivalent" multiplier....

so basically - it is useless in general, but gives you a good idea of what the starting salary is for an anesthesiologist : 200,000 to 288,000. However, of all my co-residents, I know very few who accepted jobs for less than 280K (except for those who went into academics)

on the salary.com website head of anesthesia is described as the person running the OR schedule/managing resources... so 187K for a 7 to 5 job with no weekends, no call and no patient related responsibilites - basically a pencil pusher isn't all that bad. 🙂

i suspect andy doan's head of anesthesia is the chair.... our chair makes huge bucks!!! easily over 350k

That site may be good for national stats, but I agree the local stats are terribly wrong. For radiology, rural practices in the southeast, midwest, and Texas make much more than either coasts or big cities. Get when a searched, it gave lower salaries for these areas than the national average.

There is an hospital opening for a staff General Anesthesiologist in my town starting at $350-$360/year w/ malpractice and disability paid (+ 8 wk vacation/yr). My friend works as a tech in the OR and says all of the anesthesia guys on staff seem very happy w/ their jobs.

Oudoc08,
thats a fantastic offer. Especially the 8 wks of vacation with malpractice. Only one problem with the good ol' midwest. I don't want my future house to end up like the one in that twister movie. :meanie:

Lone-

At 360K, you could just buy a new one; with the 8 wks vacation, you'd have no trouble getting time off to look for it.
