Hi all,

Like my name indicates, I am a first time re-applicant. I was wondering how awful it would be if I reused my headshot from last year, or if I need to go out and have another picture done.

Any opinions?

Thank you

I don't think there is any reason to use a different picture as long as your previous picture is well-lit and you look professional. It's just so they can remember who you are.

Not worth the money, unless your previous picture was not professional. A simple passport photo should do.

It was a professional picture, but I now have a shaved head as opposed to the shaggy style from last year. I think I'm just going to try to retake it with a GS3 when my girlfriend gets out of work and see how it comes out.

Thanks guys

Professional as in taken by a professional photographer? Or professional as in nicely dressed and combed? I'm asking because I plan on taking my own photo

Oh, by professional I meant that I didn't have a hashtagyoloswag or duckface going on in the picture. My buddy has a very expensive camera and took it at the same quality that paying someone would have, but his job has him on another coast.

Using a picture from last year is probably not a problem. I just had someone take a picture of me standing against a wall with dress clothes on. In retrospect it was a horrible picture. Also UMich sends out your picture to everyone interviewing with you....large number of people had professional pictures or at least decent pictures. It probably doesn't matter but if I was going to do it over I would have been a little more careful what I sent.

Also, did anyone else have no pants on when they took their headshot?

If you look much different than last year, you might want to submit a new picture; as mentioned, these pictures are distributed to the med school people who interview you and it helps to be able to remember later who's who among those interviewed that day.

It doesn't matter what you are wearing as long as it is mostly your head & shoulders (not a tiny full length picture of you at a tourist destination). I saw a nice one of someone taken in a lab.

Nicely dressed/combed. As long as the picture quality is decent and it isn't an awkward mirror picture you can take your own.

Can I use my passport photos for this?

You may but most people go with a non-professional shot with a bit of a smile and sometimes a slight turning of the head rather than straight on as is done in passport photos. The point is to look approachable and friendly rather than something taken in a police station ("a mug shot").

you get bonus points for actually using a mug shot though

Would you go with "approchable and friendly" or "hot and sweet and friendly"...?

I'm having a hard time decide between the two...I look better in the latter but I'm not sure if the point is to look good...Just weighing in the looks bias hahaha. 🙂

I took a picture of myself in a polo. I look kind of like a criminal. Oh well.

Okay, how much duck-face is too much duck-face?

Guys this was a serious question...i'm struggling selecting between the two pics.

I'm really interested in what the difference is between an "approachable and friendly" photo and a "hot and sweet and friendly" photo is, but I'm leaning towards "approachable and friendly" for applications. I mean, you don't want to look haggard, but you don't want to sex up your application either.

Hi LizzyM, I have a question regarding the size of the photo. I know some schools recommend certain sizes/pixels. I have a photo that looks great in the size schools request, such as "passport size," but gets blurry when enlarged.

How do adcoms view the photos? Is it fixed on the application profile, does it get printed at some point (with the risk of change in photo size)?

Thank you!

I'm sure that varies by school and that is more of a "back office" question. My school distributes pictures (postage stamp size) to interviewers along with some information about the applicant. In that case, I think the photo is shrunken.

Here's my submitted mugshot. WHAT ARE MY CHANCES?!

Depends on whether you think you could pull off a much better picture or not.

A few years ago a guy sent a picture of himself with no shirt on. He had a lot of success. Maybe try that?
