I'm starting medical school this fall at VCU and am currently in the process of trying to figure out how to go about health insurance.
  • I was previously employed, but unfortunately was not offered COBRA.
  • I am 27 - so I no longer qualify under my parents.
  • VCU itself does not offer a student health insurance plan.
Due, to this I'm assuming my main option is Medicaid as I will not have an income.

What are your experiences using Medicaid throughout medical school (especially if you were in the RVA area)?
If you were able to get a Marketplace plan, how did you go about doing this? Since we have no income, I don't think we qualify. Or did you list student loans as an income?

Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

I've been using medicaid and very happy. That being said, I haven't had any major illnesses (yet), and my school has a free service that I can see for minor outpatient things. Signing up for medicaid was super easy and they set me up with a PCP right down the street, and it's free. So far, it's been a win.
