Just a few quick questions for the masses.

1) Did anyone here minor, or considered minoring in, Health Science?

2) Does anyone see any advantages of considering this minor in regards to Medical School admission and/or future professional knowledge?

3) Is the risk to GPA justifiable to potential gain?

Any and all advice, even trolly ones, are appreciated 🙂

I personally would pick something more interesting than Health Science, especially for a minor. A minor is your chance to explore something that you really like and probably won't have a chance to again, like philosophy, or cultural anthropology, or a language or something.

You'll have the rest of your career to explore the health sciences.

That's just my opinion though.

Also to answer your question more directly, a health sciences minor doesn't look any better on paper than any other minor. The only advantage would be if it allows you to get some experiences that you wouldn't otherwise.

1. no
2. no
3. no

If you think it would be interesting and you want to take the classes, then do it. Don't do it because you think med schools will like it, because they really don't care about minors unless it's something uncommon. Don't do it if you don't think you can handle the course load, because GPA is more important than tacking on a minor.

This.

i have an exercise science minor, which is similar.

Sorry to be blunt, but this sounds like a pretty boring minor.

If you're gonna do one, do a language, philosophy, or... just go enjoy yourself more. "Health Science" will not make you stand out as an applicant.

Well, seems like a consensus is made, lol.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!

Yeah, med schools couldn't care less what you major or especially your minor was in. You need to take and do well in the prereqs, but beyond that you just need to graduate with a high GPA. Minors are worthless. Maybe they are something your parents will be proud of, but beyond that it's not worth it.

A major outside of the sciences might give you some diversity that strengthens a school's class.

i actually liked it. exercise physiology, biomechanics, pathophys, health Rx, anat, phys. It was fun 🙂

Haha, my view isn't important. I'm an engineer so I tend to have unorthodox views on these concentrations.

But if you major in it, I think it's alright. I just thought a minor would be a waste of time.

Ahhh yes engineers... you lot are unique 🙂

1. Don't think my school has a health science minor.

2. No for med school admissions; possibly for professional knowledge. You'll be re-learning all the important stuff in med school anyway, so doing it for "future professional knowledge" isn't that advantageous.

3. All classes are potential risks to GPA. There's no reason why health science courses would be any more difficult. If you would enjoy the minor, do it. Classes are easiest to excel in when you are really interested in the subject.
