For the people who are stressed out of their minds and are up studying all the time, how do you deal with your physical health? Do you run every week to stay in shape? Do you exercise in the college's gym? Or do you sit in your dorm, open up the textbook, unwrap a muffin, and go to work everyday?

I'm just curious to see what life is like for a pre-pharmacy student.

Yeah, I go to the gym once a month. Usually the day after Bally's automated system withdraws 25$ from my checking account!!!

Lol!

To the OP, I'm a nerd. The most exercise I get is walking fast to class when I realize it's 8:55 and class is at 9:00. What I do is read for pleasure, usually the children's books I didn't get to read when I was a kid.

I've gained 25 lbs since I started college. Granted, I was trying to gain muscle mass as well but due to lack of proper nutrition, gained the fat along with it.

Long Island University has a pretty nice gym. I went there last year when I had nice 4-5 hour breaks between classes, but now with only 1 hour breaks, I don't even bother, I just try go to like 2-3 times a week when I'm home.

LOL! I agree, the most calories I burn are from studying and hurrying to class on a daily basis. It kinda sounds sad but it's sort of satisfying - it's really the best excuse not to go to the gym 😉

i don't exercise because it's my own fault. taking 18+ units every quarter + 8 hours of work per week is no excuse for not sparing 2-4 hours a week going to the gym!

i'm just glad my university is built on a hill so i'm walking up and down hills all day (and i also tend to take stairs most of the time) in order to make up for my laziness

Last semester I took a weight lifting class so it was nice because I was forced to go three times a week. However, this semester I am taking 18 credits a week and working 32 hours a week, so I think I can count the number of times I have exercised on one hand. But my exercise usually consists of playing basketball or some other sport, but since I had surgery on my finger and it still is very sore, I have not been able to play any sports, which explains why I have not exercised at all this semester.

Man I tell you...first time I was in college I NEVER got as sick as I do now! I go the flu (despite getting a flu shot last year) and 2 other nasty viruses this semester. My immunity has been shot to hell! I should probably get back on the treadmill though now that I can (sort of) breath again!

I remember feeling my best when I did swimming 3 times per week. It's cardiovascular and somewhat relaxing (like yoga) all at the same time. 🙂

I agree I got the flu as well and it took me about a week to get over the stupid thing. I don't remember ever taking that long to get over the flu.

Working out (weight-lifting) is very important to me, so I have stayed on top of it 5 times a week when I was in community college and 4 times a week at the University. My school has a decent gym where big guys lift, so I try to work out with them. This semester though, I am graduating and taking 18 credits. On top of that I work 30 hrs/week as a tech. No time for the gym, I'm lucky to make it 2-3 times a week. I will up it this summer before pharmacy school (and hopefully continue to train hard IN pharm school).
As far as my health....late nights, junk-food, energy drinks galore, lack-of-sleep, no health insurance, my body must hate me.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday up at 6 a.m., hydrate, gym by 7:15 am. 3-5 mile runs with a mile warm-up, mile cool-down, around 7:45-7 min/mile pace. stretched. Shower, ate. In class by 10 a.m.

I had this schedule for 2 years while finishing up my undergrad degree. Lost about 25lbs

I try to get to the gym 5-6 times a week for an hour to an hour and a half. I've noticed that I have a lot more energy now than I did when I wasn't working out, plus it's a time that I can't think/worry about school, work, husband, etc... because I'm so exhausted. I think that it has helped me a lot because it is time for just me each day. Now, instead of dreading going to the gym, I actually miss it if I don't. My husband and I joined a gym together because it forced us to go since we were paying for it (as opposed to the free gym here at school), plus it is something good for us that we can do together. When one of us doesn't have the motivation to go, the other usually does. 🙂

Wow! Working 30 hours/week and taking 18 credit hours! That's a pretty hefty load. 😱 I currently work 30, but I'm only taking 7 credit hours until I start full time in the fall. I feel pretty busy as it is (although I also have a wife and 2 year old so that doesn't help)...anyways I still think it's very important to get to the gym a few times/week and lift for 1/2 hour and run for 1/2 hour at least.

wish i could do that, but class at 8am or research at 8am prevents me from doing that. I usually run in the afternoon/nighttime.

I know someone who once took 29 hours in a semester while working 20 hours/wk. The reason I know this person is because this person is me.

I was lucky that my classes didnt begin until 10, however, I also had some late classes as well. Another schedule that has worked for me is: Sun, Tues, Thurs. Sunday: go to gym about 2 hrs after waking up, Tues & Thurs wake up about 4-4:30, at work by 8 a.m. I like the Tues/Thurs schedule because it allows for 2 days of waking up early during the work week, instead of 3.

It changes every semester...

This semester I'm taking 18 units and working 24 hours per week. I do cross country mountain biking Wednesday evenings, some Friday or Saturday evenings, and I do cross country or downhill mountain biking on Sundays when I'm off from work. I aim to ride a total of 40 miles per week. I bike a lot more during the summer... probably 80-100 miles a week.

I only go to the gym maybe once or twice a week when my riding buddy is busy. Half of my workout consists of cardio and half is upper body weights. I go to the gym 3-4 days a week during the summer.

I also play flag football once a week with some friends. During the summer, I try to do different physical activities like hiking, jogging, etc. I try to change it up a lot.

Last semester I've been going to the gym 5 times a week (lifting 3 days/ running 2 days). This semester I'm taking classes that require a lot of reading so I cut out my running days. I've been gaining strength but also a bit of bodyfat. -_-

Here's a tip that I think works great...instead of running on the treadmill, on days you have a lot of reading or studying, I just cut down to a fast walk and maybe double my time instead. Studying and exercise at the same time, you can't beat it!
