A friend of mine who just got accepted into med school, had an okay GPA. He says one thing that helped him greatly was his participation in lobbying for health care reform.

I have a few years before I apply for med schools & finish my undergrad. I know nothing about healthcare and politics.

I am Canadian. Would my lobbying even be allowed in America?

Second, are there some books I can read to bring me up to speed with the debate? I would like to get a head start, so when the time comes I can actually have a conversation about such topics.

Thanks!

Do things you're interested in. Your friend probably said it was important because he/she was heavily involved in it. Significant involvement in any activity will be helpful.

As far as some basic sources to start learning about healthcare reform, NEJM has a healthcare section they post opinion pieces on that would probably be good to read. The NY Times also offers good info on reform.
