Height... high heels at interview

For interviews, if I am a girl and already 5'10", would it be a bad idea to wear heels? With heels I would feel just so tall... I personally like how heels look, I like the little clicking sounds on non-carpeted surfaces :-D I also usually feel pretty comfortable in them, so the only thing that possibly bothers me is that I might be towering over people, because I usually do with heels...

I'm a 5'11" girl who enjoys the fact that being tall means wearing comfy flats. 🙂 But hey, if heels are your thing, go for it. I ended up wearing shoes with a couple of inches on them to my interviews because I didn't have time to alter my suit pants and the legs were a little long, and I don't think it did me any harm.

a little bit of heels is okay, but don't go "single-white-female-stiletto" (ref. SWF the movie) on your interview day. Campus tours can be tiring.

how wonderful it must be to be tall!!! at all of my interviews, I was always the shortest out of the group even with my heels on! I'd say, wear what you feel most comfortable in, and if that means heels wear heels. If you wear something you feel comfortable in, you'll exude more confidence. That and your height will make you seem like a most impressive young lady!

🙂 I wish I had such a problem. I usually need to wear heels because my pants are too long and I'm barely 5'2''. Though to be honest when wearing heels on those campus tours my feet did not thank me.

I"m 5'5, but I buy my pants really long because I love wearing heels. I found some really comfortable shoes for my interviews, so my feet were very happy. Sometimes you have to break your shoes in. Some of the shoes hurt my feet when I first buy them, but after wearing them 3 or 4 times they get comfortable.

I always have to wear heels to my interviews. I'm 5'8" but have a weird problem... I had to buy "long" pants instead of "regular" because the regular were too short. Unfortunately the "long" are too long and I'm too busy (read: lazy😉) to hem them. So with my heels, I'm about 5'11". The good news is, I've read from several sources that taller people are more likely to be hired on job interviews, so hopefully that translates to acceptance at med schools! 👍

i wore <2 inch heels, but my feet were killing me, especially when i had to trek all over creation on public transport even before getting to the interview. in that case, i'd bring a big purse and wear comfortable shoes until you get there, then put the heels on.

some schools advise different shoes for the tour. i wouldn't feel weird about it if it is offered. do it. your feet will thank you.

all that being said, if you're not used to wearing heels, wear something flat. this is not the time to "try on mom's shoes." if you're used to flats, do that. no one will care as long as the shoes are professional looking. there were always a few ladies that wore frumpy orthopedic shoes. i DEFINITELY wouldn't go that far, but i'm sure you can find some cute mary janes or something.

OP-it's not weird. i'm 5'11" and wear heels. it makes me feel more confident. don't know why, but if that's what you like and the shoes are professional, go for it.

i wore these in my interview shoes (not stilettos) and there was still some pain at the end of the day.

meh, it's not that big of a deal. i've got like 2-3 inches on my husband.

One of my interviewers was a really short doctor. He was probably like 5 feet tall, and he introduced me to another doctor that was even shorter. It was a little weird.

6' girl here. i wore 3' or so stilettos (pant suit though so you couldn't tell what type of heel). I was taller than most guys on my interviews even. More than anything else it was an icebreaker with the other interviewers. I had a large purse and put some flats in there for walking around, but i still wore the heels on a few of the tours. i think i looked 10x better in the heels than without. wear them if you want to. don't let your height keep you from doing it.

Wearing high heels is ill-advised, as there are plenty of times when you might need to climb the stairs or run around the campus visiting the hospitals and what not. It's just not a good idea in general.

EDIT: Or at least bring comfortable shoes for when you go on tour. That's the most important thing.

I'm 6' and I wear heels to all my interviews. Go for it. You're not trying to date your interviewer, you are trying to impress them. Height, wrong or not, usually subconsciously impresses people. Yeah, its unfair, sorry short people. But it is to your advantage.

I don't know how bad some people are at wearing heels, but I run, jump, dance, run marathons, leap over hurdles, climb mountains, swim...in heels. No, I just run, dance, and can def ascend and descend stairs easily in heels. It should depend on your confidence level in them. Heels make me feel great. Im so glad my coworkers convinced me its not only ok but good for taller girls to wear heels...and im not even that tall. 5'7" represent!!

Also, I didnt realize how many taller women are premed! modeliscious premedssss!!!!!!!

Professional heel length is less than 3 inches...I found some comfortable modest heels from Easy Spirit...

To the RealMD...if you've ever worked in a law office or any type of business office, you'll notice most women in suits where low heels...in fact I think flats with a skirt suit look really odd...

So true! I won't wear any skirt with flats unless they're sandals, and that's clearly a little casual for interviews 🙂 I wore heels to all of my interviews. I bought a cute pair of dress shoes, probably 2.5-3 inches. However, I'm 5'3 and have been wearing heels for as long as I can remember. Running in them doesn't phase me, and a flight of stairs cetainly isn't a problem. My feet did just fine on tours, and I just felt better than I would have in flats. I really think it depend on how comfortable in them. I have a few friends who hate to dress up and just look miserable and awkward in heels. If you're one of those, by all means wear flats. Otherwise, get a good quality pair of heels, they're much more comfortable.
