Hello all,
I wanted to ask this question here because i believe you can help.
so i have decided to follow my heart and apply to medical school. I am looking at the application cycle of 2014 to enter in 2015. My focus is to gain acceptance to an osteopathic medical school. I am currently in a PhD program and want to know what I should do. I need to boost my uGPA as it is a 2.8/sci 3.0. I have a research base MS in biology with a 3.8GPA and got a gre score of 1300( just to say where I am testing wise as I havent taken the MCAT yet).

I want to know if it is worth it to continuing with the masters portion of my PhD. I know that that the second masters wont help me,but I want to know if it will look very very poorly for me to leave after one year.

Would it be worth it to take some classes at the undergrad level( anatomy and phys) to boost my gpa.. The issue that i have is I have taken a good bit of classes( Immuno, Micro,Genetics,Cell, Molecular, Biochem) all at the graduate level ( with A's) so I dont think I can repeat them.

Or should i try to apply to a SMP to boost acceptance? There are a few that focus on underrepresented minorities ( I am an African American woman, and single parent) that have linkages with medical schools(MD and DO) that I would be a strong candidate for acceptance.
I am currently working as a part time medical scribe, have good research experience and publication, and a few publications under my belt. I havent takent the MCAT yet, because I will be retaking Physics to replace the C i got when i first took it. I am considering staying because I am also employed by the university and will get free tuition( 6CH/term) and could use that to boost a GPA.
Any help/advice is needed

Thanks

I think you have a great chance, certainly a better chance DO because of grade replacement. But with a good enough MCAT and your grad school gpa I think you have a compelling case to make. Plus your GRE performance shows you're good at standardized testing, so with the right preparation you should be able to do well enough.

I would browse mdapps and the underdog thread on this site to get a sense of what the lowest gpa possible is for your target schools. It might be lower than you think, esp for matriculants with graduate degrees and mcat > 30. Good luck.

Yup, you need to get at GPA >3.0
GRE means nothing to MCAT; we'll have to wait and see how the real thing turns out. Go for at least a 26

I think it's worth it. You don't want to show that you drop everything you do just because you don't like it.

YES! You need to show AdComs that you can handle medical school coursework and load. Don't repeat any courses unless you got a C or less in them. Go for rigorous courses that you haven't had, if you got A/Bs in the courses you mention below.

I don't think it's necessary. You're on the cusp of acceptability in terms of your GPAs,

Looks like a good plan so far.
