Hi everyone 😳,

Please advice me!! I currently have a total of 82 credit hours. GPA: 3.02. First of all, please have a look at these:

Fall '07 – Human A/P I ------- D
Fall '07 – Human A/P I Lab ------- C
Fall '07 – Human A/P II ------- W
Fall '07 – Human A/P II Lab------ W

Spring '08 -- Human A/P II ------ C
Spring '08 -- Human A/P II Lab ----- B
Fall '08 -- Human A/P I ----- W
Fall '08 -- Human A/P I Lab ----- W

Spring '07 – Principle of Chem I ----- B
Spring '07 – Principle of Chem I Lab ----- B
Summer '07 – Principle of Chem II ----- W
Summer '07 –Principle of Chem II Lab----- W

😱 Terrible, aren't they 😕? All W's I got are from those classes. I was passionately involved into church activities, coming up the dance moves, and leading the worship dance since 2005 – 2009. As time passed, I realized that my concentration was taken away from school. I've been working part-time in the Pharmacy since 2006. I knew that my only-desired-career was to work in the pharmacy 😍.

Got bad grades above 🙁 – took different classes into other different careers. In the mean time, I had researched into other careers. As a result, I found out that I was not interested in any of them. Depressed!! I realized that I only love to become a Pharmacist. Not because of the money itself (honestly!), but because I seemed not to be interested in anything else 🙁.

I am desired to commit myself and willing to give up anything that would distract me from studying again (does it sound impossible 😕). Please advice me: should I give up my dream of going to Pharmacy School or may I still have hope? What should I do?

Greatly and sincerely appreciate!!!

Welcome to the prepharmacy forum!

Please take some time to read the Pre-Pharmacy FAQ stickied at the top of the Pre-Pharmacy forum. You will find a LOT of useful information about preparing to apply for pharmacy school.

On a personal note - your academic performance, from your own understanding - is poor due to many distractions outside of school.

It isn't all that uncommon. What you have to do is decide what is important to you. If it is school - then you need to dedicate yourself to your studies. There is no reason a student should be taking and withdrawing from the same class twice.

Take sometime to sit down and think about why you were not successful. Was it the course material? Amount of studying? Test-taking technique? All of this should be taken into account before you retake these courses. You do have a lot of Ws - but that in it of itself is not something that would prevent you from getting into pharmacy school - trends do matter however. From this point forward ensure that you are devoting enough time to your studies.

You didn't post your grades for bio or microbio - but if these scores are decent - there is no reason you cannot do equally well in A&P.

Use this forum and the community - that is what it's here for.

There is no reason why you can't go to school, be an A student and be actively involved in church activities. I have been involved in numerous church activites and have managed to keep my GPA very high. Yeah, it put me staying up really late studying some nights, but I feel as if it is worth it. My Sunday School class I teach along with the musicians I work with know I am in school full time and have been absolutely wonderful about trying to work around a schedule for our activities, rehearsals, etc. and I try to be careful with their schedules as well. You can work it out, just look at your schedule and maybe do some rearranging. BUT, you may possibly need to get an assistant for you church activities. It never hurts to have someone you can depend upon, esp. during finals week when you free time is spent studying.

You have to be able to divide your time well between school, work and passions. Pharmacy school is a rougher pace than undergrad and you will have to study much more. You can still be involved with your church, but you most likely will have to take a step or two back so you can devote more time to studies. Otherwise, the harsh reality is, you won't be able to get into a pharmacy school.

It's possible that you're just not cut out for school - Why couldn't you balance your church activities and relatively easy pre-requisite classes? That speaks to larger issues than just problems with school, namely time management and attention span.

Anyway, your Chem grade is excellent compared to the rest of your grades, so maybe you have some natural aptitude there! Use that to your advanage, as Orgo is one of the, if not the, hardest subject we have to study for.

I don't see any mathematics classes, either. Have you done Calculus or are you just getting started (I.e., do you have any AP classes?)?

More info please!

You will need to retake all prerequisites and make all As. Any B grade will make your chances get lower. Also take a lot of electives and make sure you make As. With grades like yours, you need like 45-60 more hours all straight A's. You cant afford to make any B. Your chances are 95% rejection and 5% acceptance now. If you correct your mistakes, you might bring it up to 50%-50%. You have too many W's and many schools will disqualify you. Next time, try to balance your activities better. I wish you good luck

Some schools offer academic forgiveness, which lets you use only the most recent grade on prereq courses. You may want to check this out, too.

I'd see you'll be like 😱 .... 🙁 .... I thought of giving up. Therefore, I fell into depression state for over a year, not knowing what else should I pursue 🙁.

If anything happened and I'd have a B or even worse retaking my classes, then shall I decide not to pursue going for Pharmacy again?

I wish I could erase my grade records and start all over again. But! the reality is harsh. However, I am willing to pursue my pharmacy major again. No mater how long it would take, I commit to start again. Does it seem possible? Please please advise me!!! Has anyone made it through along with a situation like mine??

That A in Physics lab sticks out - What did you enjoy so thoroughly in that lab that allowed you to surpass your other grades so strongly? Maybe you've got some potential there that you should try to tap, instead of trying to put a round peg into a square hole?

To rephrase, while Koercive is right in that you have a relatively low credit hour count @ 82, the chips are really, really stacked against you. In essentially every math-and-science based class you've taken so far your grades have been average, but average isn't just enough to get into Pharmacy school (usually).

I think you'll need more than us telling you it's possible. You need a significant life change, and/or study habits change, and/or a time management change. I found that, during my time as an undergraduate peer adviser, students often came to me asking/pleading for help, and I would advise them, they would leave thrilled and empowered, only to return the next quarter all glum. When I'd ask what happened, they'd said that their grades are still poor - Indeed, they didn't really change anything. They just told themselves they were going to change and that things would automatically be different due to altering the mindset only. And listen, a perceived motivation is just that... Perceived. In psychology parlance, this is called denial.

Be careful you're not in denial about your desire or ability to do what you want to do. Denial can keep you indulging in bad or non-existant study habits, and spending your time very unwisely (The biggest offender recently is MMORPGs/other video games, with World of Warcraft taking the cake by far).

You seem like a very genuine person and I feel terrible having to say these things to you. I have seen so many well-intentioned, bright students get subpar grades due to poor time management and it's heartbreaking.
HTH

perhaps it's time to turn a clean slate and get all a's......those W's are disastrous (i didn't even know schools would allow that many) and the rest of your grades aren't pretty. Don't bring up "dance moves" at an interview as an excuse.

Hi OP,

I hope that you're really motivated to pursue pharmacy. Because if you are, I can assure you you'll find a way to make sure your grades stay up and you succeed. When I was in high school I had absolutely no direction whatsoever. I was a seriously lousy student. And I was even worse than you - I didn't have any outside activities detracting from my studies, I just didn't care. When I got to college I found a sudden passion for science that had been completely absent in my younger years. I did a complete 180 and really changed from back then. But the thing is, I really LIKED what I was learning, doing, and accomplishing. Can you say the same when you're taking your courses? And I agree with Passion4Sci, it's not just about your attitude (it seems like you have the right one), but also your organized plan/goals and a resolution to stick to them.

I don't know how long ago you took these classes, but at my school they don't look at any math or science classes older than 5 years. If you retook the W and C classes with more focus and vision and did well in them (getting mostly A's with a few B's), it's an easily explainable change in an interview/personal statement. I'd look into schools that have the same policy with grades as mine and do some serious soul searching to make sure you have gotten through your depression and are ready to jump in and hit the books. It's not an easy road and once you get into pharmacy school you need to make sure you don't have a lot of drama to deal with b/c your buffer zone to deal with life's little curve balls diminishes.
