I'm a practicing pathologist and have been hearing from radiology colleagues eerily similar complaints about your job market. Sorry if this has come up before here but I am genuinely interested- have your chairmen started cutting programs and/or slots yet? Ours still haven't.

I wouldn't go that far, but I have certainly seen minimal "can't find a job" posts this year -- a welcome change from the 3 years prior

Didn't they already get rid of the Alternative Pathway starting in 2014? That's what I've heard. Anyone confirm?

I think it's 2015. Some programs have closed and/or been closed during the previous years. Also while the job market has been crappy, Ithink the comparison between rads and path is simply off. Rads has a monstrous amount of volume, to the point that it's hard to keep up. Rads touches just about every patient that comes into a hospital. Path not so much. Much less volume overall in path than in rads. Rads are kind of at the max when it comes to reading, whereas that's not the case for path. You also don't need path 24/7 like you need rads. Apples and oranges.

Thanks for your replies. We pathologists are in a bad position. This has been a long time in the making, and I don't wish this on you. Just wondering how you see things.

Radiology is just as bad as pathology. 2 years of fellowship is becoming the norm. I am now a fellow. The last job I applied for had 74 other applicants.

Alternative pathway is not closed. It will not close ever.

Anyone who claims it is closed. Ask to see their source of info. They have none. They are liars.

State your name and your place of fellowship. Otherwise, we'll believe you're a desperate IMG trying to scare away competition by posting troll comments on SDN.

Could you please also tell us about your Echocardiogram fellowship?

In which countries do radiologists read echocardiograms? India? Pakistan? Iran? Bangladesh? China? I have no clue.
