I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to give some advice on my personal statement. I have a first draft and if you'd be willing to take a look, I'll be extremely greatful!

Advice: don't bother with medical school. The golden age of medicine is long gone and the job really isn't worth it nowadays. It's too late for many of us, but you're still young: get out while you can. Run!

There was a bizarre moment awhile back when a bunch of 3rd years were congregating in the basic science building before one of our standardized patient exam sessions, and a tour group passed through with applicants in tow. Without prompting, without hesitation, all ten or so of us turned to the group and started yelling "NO DON'T DO IT! IT ISN'T WORTH IT!" They all started laughing. They thought we were joking. You probably think I'm joking right now. Nobody is joking.

It's funny that I realize you're totally serious, but am still going to take my chances. I mean my current job is the exact same way, so what difference does it make?

Yeah, I hated my job before med school too. So if you already hate your job or you already hate school or you already hate whatever it is that you're doing, and your attitude is "well, it probably won't be worse than this" then I honestly think that's a pretty healthy attitude to bring into it.

I almost think it's just natural to hate your job. I mean wouldn't it be cool not to have to work and still have money? I'd probably find something to do that was like work, but I wouldn't go if I didn't feel like it, which is the worst part about work. It's mandatory 👎

Because, in your curent job, you won't spend the next 10 years in training. Because you won't accumulate 100-200k in debt. Because, no matter how much you dislike your job right now, you probably have more free time for your friends, family, hobbies, etc.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor,
Would you be mine? Won't you be mine?

i guess i'm rare (lucky?) in that i loved my old job and love my school right now.

to the OP, i'll take a look, but i'm in the middle of exams now. pm me in about a week and a half. 👍

the "golden age" may be gone, but the need for good docs still exists. someone has to do it. if you feel that calling, step up to the plate. for some, the job being "worth it" doesn't just refer to money.

This is my point. People always think that things are better.

In my current job I'm constantly training and being tested. It's something I know that doctors due too, but it's nothing new.

I won't accumulate 100-200K in debt, but I also make at least 40K less than most docs (assuming most docs can hit 100K). So if I had 200K in debt, I could pay it off with the difference in about 5 years post residency and then pocket the difference. Yes, that would suck.

And I'll have the same or more freetime for friends, family, etc. Being out of the country makes it difficult to see them, as being in another state and not allowed leave.

I probably won't be shot at, too, which is a bonus.

Eh, I think we're supposed to, but I lost my super powers and now I'm just a normal guy. 🙁

Oh dear...didn't realize I was going to start a revolution of Docs leaving the field....

Hmmmm...more chances for the youn'ns to come in and take over? 🙄

Don't listen to the hacks and martyrs that bitch and moan about being a doctor and being a med student....and steer clear of them when you get in. They just try to tear down everyone and everything around them because they lack the self-esteem and self-confidence to put themselves out there and take it upon themselves to better their station in life.

If you want to do it, then just go for it and take your lumps. If you can roll with things and keep your head up, you'll be fine. And even if you can't, you'll be a doctor...you'll just sound like a miserable ass.

Seriously, Dude, has it been that bad? I wouldn't say that all four years of medical school were one incredible orgy of unbearble pleasure but it sure beat working at a real job.

One of the only regrets I have with graduation looming is that in July I will have to start working at a real job again. I mean fer' cryin' out loud, I've been on a de facto vacation since March.

Hey Moosepilot, exactly what do you do in real life?

Assassin.

You ever notice that an assassin has two asses?

Hi. My advice is to have someone you know and trust edit it...and then edit it again. Your personal statement is your opportunity to tell the admissions committees who you are, and why they should make you a doctor. My Dean told me to pick out some good life experiences that tie into why you want to go into medicine, but lay off the "I received my first toy doctor kit when I was five and I knew at once...." That stuff is really bad.
