Hi All, What are my chances for DMD or DDS?

State Residence
= NJ
- Race/Ethnicity= Asian
- DAT (AA, TS, PAT, any section 17 or lower)= Not yet assume 17-20 I'm not a good test taker
- GPA (cumulative & science) 3.36 if taking community college courses into consideration. If not, 3.2 approx. But I graduated from University of Michigan and took half of my courses at Rutgers (NJ). I can say for FACT Michigan is much harder than Rutgers. Rutgers courses saved my grades. I really regret going to Michigan, the professors really don't give a ** about there students. Will they look at strength of institution?
- Location(s) Preferred: West Coast / East Coast / Midwest / South= Don't care. I'm 25, I want a stable career. I'll thank god/force if I get somewhere
- Location(s) Preferred: Urban / Suburban / Rural
=Don't care. I'm 25, I want a stable career. I'll thank god/force if I get somewhere
- Rank the following factors - Location, Price, Facilities, Research, Reputation =Don't care. I'm 25, I want a stable career. I'll thank god/force if I get somewhere
- Are you Christian conservative and would prefer a school that was? I'm non religious but I wouldn't mind being with Christians. I'm open minded. I can deal with 4 years of annoyance (If they're close minded) if I'm gauranteed a great future. Again, I'm 25, I want a stable career. I'll thank god/force if I get somewhere.
- Shadowing Hours (if you do not answer, I will assume 100 hours) I'm looking. I plan to get 100 hours or so. Where can I find shadowing in NJ?
- Schools you are definitely applying to no matter what
- 10 other schools you were considering applying to
NYU, UMDNJ

P.S. The AADSAS ask if I applied elsewhere. I applied to PharmD but if I stated it, would it affect my chances of acceptance. ReaiIisticlly I'm 25 with out a job, I want a stable career. Really, can they find out? What do you people say? I am angered by this question. I feel like its discrimination. Just because you didn't get accepted to MD or PharmD, Should it affect your chances? People can change interests. There are people like me (25 yrs) and hard working and looking for a stable career.

Take the Dat then come back people will be able to answer your questions much better. 🙂

hey,

I'm from NJ too. in terms of where to find shadowing... you just have to call places and i figured out that when they say they'll call you back later.. they won't. so you just have to keep bugging them.

Hi Thanks all,

I will take the DAT in about 2 weeks.

P.S. should I state that I applied to pharmacy? Can they find out? Who is reading it. The administrators at AADSAS or will the committee see that I applied to Pharmacy?

Darn Michigan biology professors for their grade deflations 🙁
The prestige of a useless school. 😡
Why the hell did I transfer????? I had a 3.7 at Rutgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😡

I'm not sure how they would check, but I think it'd be a bad idea to leave it out. Their reason for asking, to answer your question, is because they want to admit individuals that have a passion for dentistry and are not just doing it for the money. It is not a philosophical thing, it is a matter of retention. They are investing time/resources in you to create a dentist and don't want someone they spent 3 years training, drop out at the end because his heart wasn't with it and he could no longer bear doing something he didn't genuinely enjoy. As for automatically hurting your acceptance? As long as you can paint a picture in your personal statement to show (or feign) a late-developing passion for dentistry (that was not just a product of wanting "a stable job" and not being able to get one in Pharm or MD), you'll be fine.

Kill the DATs, shadow, get good LORs, and work hard on your personal statement and you'll be fine.

haha I like how he says, "What are my chances for a DMD or DDS"

Honestly, you really only seem interested in how stable dentistry is. Going into dentistry, or any other field, solely for the money is never a good idea.

LOL!!! People need to utilize google way more often.

You seem frustrated! You need to figure out what you want to do with your life and not dip into whatever you can get. The committee is going to notice that and if you don't have a kick ass essay stating why you suddenly came to this epiphany that you wanted to become a dentist they will be on to the next one. So when you do put that you applied to a pharmD program just be willing to explain in your essay how dentistry is everything you've ever wanted and if it's not believe me they'll be able to tell and if you do happen to get into dental school based on fakeness, YOU WILL BE MISERABLE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

How much shadowing have you done so far? I would shadow for at least 40 hours before deciding to pursue dentistry. You really don't want to rush into something this important just because your stats can get you in.
