MCAT attempt 1: 28M
MCAT attempt 2: 27R

Lots of Ec, 3yrs of research and 1 manuscript ready for publication. Lots of international clinical exposure (volunteering, mission trips). fairly strong lors. No acceptances from MD schools yet. How do i look for DOs? Illinois resident.

3 things:

1. your GPA is a huge black mark. I'm sure you know this. Fortunately, DO schools have grade replacement. what are you doing right now to bring your GPA up? what do you plan on doing in the future?

2. how much clinical exposure do you have in the US? international service is good, but you also need exposure to hospitals in the US because it is the system you will be training in. 1.5yrs/150 hrs is average (for MD applicants)

3. I think your MCAT is "ok" for DO schools - I wouldn't retake it unless you can do significantly better on the AAMC practice tests.

1) Yeah i know. I made some terrible choices on what classes i should take. I am currently doing well in my last semester courses. With a 4.0 (very very very likely) i will have a 3.12.

2) Ive about 2yrs of volunteering in the USA (250hrs ish), 2 full months of volunteering in a developing country (200 hrs)

3) I wasnt planning on retaking the MCAt unless the adcom wants me to.

I'll just toss a couple of thoughts out.

  • How much of your clinical experience was done here? International experience is fine, but not as a standalone.
  • The average GPA of an accepted DO applicant is 3.45, and your MCAT is right around average (27).
  • I would not retake the MCAT for DO schools since you dropped a point after your retake (which, incidentally, doesn't look phenomenal). What was breakdown like on your two tests? Do you have any low subscores?

Edit: Just saw you answered the first question while I was typing.
