I’m an new RN that wants to go to Grad School. I am very interested in medicine now that I have experience in the health care setting. I’m also interested in becoming Nurse Anesthetist. This would be my second choice as a profession.

My preference:
1. MD/DO
2. CRNA

To become a physician it would take 7-11 more years of training but to become a CRNA would take me only 2-3yrs depending on the program.

I use to always assume that physicians made the most in healthcare, until I have took a look at the numbers. As a CRNA (in my area) I would make more money than as a FP/PEDS/IM doctors do. 😱 You would think that because of all the training they would make more.As a Anesthesiologist I would make only around 30% more in total lifetime earnings because of length of training and educational loans. Some of this could be offset by investing money into a portfolio in the early years as a CRNA.

My calculations were based on these local salaries:

FP/IM/PEDS= 160,000yr Do they generally make more than this?
MD gas= 350,000yr
CRNA=200,000yr

I’m not trying to be vain by looking at the $$$$$$. I would think that you would expect to make more as physicians considering the length and intensity of your training.

What do you think? What would you do? Is all the extra work worth it just for the knowledge and autonomy? What are some of the other pro and cons of going the medical route?

Ask yourself, do you want to be a physician? Or do you want to punch a clock and belong to a union?

pro - autonomy, "prestige" (even though this has eroded like all heck), and the training to think outside of an algorithm.

con - malpractice, eventual job replacement by np/pa/crna/etc., family members begging for prescriptions.

in the end, ya gotta do what's good for you; are you content "punching the clock" as the last poster said, or do you want / can you handle the decision-making authority?

Punch a clock if it pays more.

Just kidding.

You sure about the CRNA salary??? Heck, if they made that much, I'd might even quit the MD route and a become CRNA instead.

It boyles down to what you want to do and what level of responsibility you desire as well. Money factors into the decision, but personally, job satisfaction matters more.

I think it should be obvious to most that medicine doesn't pay what it used to. Students SHOULD (but don't always) know this before starting. Most do. You should not go into medicine for the money, it just doesn't pay compared to the crap you have to put up with. You go into it because it is what you see yourself doing, for your own reasons (whatever they may be). If you can punch a clock b/c it pays more, do it. not kidding. I can't, so I went to med school.

Anybody out there can confirm those numbers??? It seems awfully high to me, but I'm in no position to say.

Don't want to start an anesthesiologist vs CRNA debate.. if those numbers are real, just doesn't seem fair to me. Oh well....
