Im an new RN that wants to go to Grad School. I am very interested in medicine now that I have experience in the health care setting. Im also interested in becoming Nurse Anesthetist. This would be my second choice as a profession.
My preference:
1. MD/DO
2. CRNA
To become a physician it would take 7-11 more years of training but to become a CRNA would take me only 2-3yrs depending on the program.
I use to always assume that physicians made the most in healthcare, until I have took a look at the numbers. As a CRNA (in my area) I would make more money than as a FP/PEDS/IM doctors do. 😱 You would think that because of all the training they would make more.As a Anesthesiologist I would make only around 30% more in total lifetime earnings because of length of training and educational loans. Some of this could be offset by investing money into a portfolio in the early years as a CRNA.
My calculations were based on these local salaries:
FP/IM/PEDS= 160,000yr Do they generally make more than this?
MD gas= 350,000yr
CRNA=200,000yr
Im not trying to be vain by looking at the $$$$$$. I would think that you would expect to make more as physicians considering the length and intensity of your training.
What do you think? What would you do? Is all the extra work worth it just for the knowledge and autonomy? What are some of the other pro and cons of going the medical route?
