So ive been trying to shadow/volunteer at my own dental office. i tried in the summer but the secretary said it wasnt possible at the time and to contact them in a month or two. I had my mom ask for my dentists email recently when she went in for her apt and the secretary told my mom "oh she must want to intern, tell her to email me" so she wrote her email on the back of the card and i emailed her a week ago and she hasnt even responded!!! =[ i dont know what im supposed to do now. Should i just email my dentist even though she said to her instead? and is it weird if i go to a different dentist and ask to shadow? i feel like they'd be less helpful.

Not weird at all, I've shadowed multiple dentists and specialties. I asked my dentist, then a friends dentist, which led to that dentists associate, which also led to one of their offices with a different specialty. Asking my friend wound up getting me 3 different dentists to shadow at 2 different offices to shadow and get a feel for other practices/specialties.

Thats a good idea, I should def ask my friends. How did you aproach the dentist btw? through email/call/in person?

Hi! I had a similar situation, and I ended up asking everyone I knew who their dentist was. I have shadowed a few places now (my dentist even told me the more places the better since most dental offices run differently). The way I contacted them depended on the information that was given to me. I in general always like to email them, but if you call the dentists office and just explain that you are a student interested in dentistry and would love to meet with whoever the dentist is for advice... or whatever they are always happy to set up an appointment for you. That way when you meet in person and ask questions and what not you can bring up that you would love to gain experience and ask if they are willing to allow you to shadow. They are also really friendly and always willing to offer as much advice as possible.

I dunno if you have tried this yet, but I actually am thinking of calling my orthodontist. Honestly just ask your friends and family. My aunt is really close with her dentist so she actually called for me... and that has worked out great.

Anyways hope this helps!

the weird part to me is you had your mom involved in it

I went to the office myself before i spoke to them in person. and then when they said to contact them in a month or two i emailed the dentist but my email said it didnt go through because it was incorrect. So i only had my mom ask for the correct email so i could email again.
