I just graduated from a very good undergrad with a 3.45 cum and a 3.18 sci...I also got a 27 on the MCATs (9,9,9). What are my chances of getting into a DO school?

Experience:
- 3 yrs research (chemistry)
- 1 yr hospital volunteer
- 3 yrs community volunteer (tutor)
- some leadership experience
- shadowed a DO

Also, I am taking a year off before hopefully going to medical school. I am either going to work and take 2 classes each semester or enroll in a formal post-bac program ( I am from NJ so that would mean the UMDNJ program). Which option do you think I should go with?

I got into several DO schools, so I'm familiar with what they like. And uh, with those stats, I'd say most of them would roll out a red carpet for you.

I wouldn't worry much either. Sure if you have time, and you know for sure you can improve your GPA by attending post bac do it.

Agree with above posters.

Your information looks similar to mine. I believe what will make you stand out is the three years of research experience, especially at a research oriented school like UMDNJ. If you can make your secondary essay on the UMDNJ application really shine I believe you have an excellent shot there. Start working on it now. Good luck

My stats are very similar to yours as well, and I was offered interviews at every school I applied to (all of which I turned down after getting into umdnj-som).

As far as taking time off, it's hard to give advice without knowing your reasons for doing so.

How old will your MCATs be when you apply?

I think if they are 3 years or older then you will have to retake them. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks guys/ gals for all your advice, and the extra boost of confidence. I have decided to work for a year as a research assistant instead of doing a post-bac program.

Also my MCATs score is from last Aug so they should be fine.

Once again thank you all, and if anyone else wants to chime in I would really appreciate it. 😍

Everything looks solid, just remember you have to want to go to D.O. school. Your interview is very important, and can do more for you or hurt you more than your grades. You have to have the numbers (which you do), but you also have to make a good personal impression. And I promise you will if you really want to do D.O. It will just come out during the interview. The same applies on your personal statement. Unless you really want to do a postbac, you may be better off taking a year off to travel or save money. Whatever you do, have fun!

Also, this advice about 'wanting it', varies from school to school and interviewer to interviewer. Some schools/interviewers just want to see a person willing to commit to work hard for four years to help people. I would volunteer for projects you really care about as much as you can during your year off, and get some more clinical experience. You're way up there for research already.

Aside from all of that, I'd say your a shoe-in. You'll have an acceptance in the next year if you apply.

p.s. visit some of the schools you really want to apply to since you have the time.

Hey Jade,

Those are pretty impressive stats. I think you would have an excellent chance of getting into and Osteopathic School. The 1 year of hospital experience and the research is very attractive. Good luck to you in your application endeavors.

I dont get some ppl... They knock themselves down before they even try....just go for it man!!! I'll bet my car that u get into UMDNJ...haha....(i don't have a car) 😀
Oh one thing though....don't mess the interview...i think DO schools put more empahsis on that. I know a friend that had good stats like urs but messed the interview and got rejected, no waitlist. Good thing he got in somewhere else. 👍

Enjoy life. You'll definitely get in somewhere.

Stay away from the classes/post-bacc. No point.
