I can't decide and need advice ASAP! I don't know which to pick, UOP or UCSF!!! I feel that both are great schools, but that only makes my decision harder. Also, I'm running out of time to decide. If anyone can give any advice please do, and give me your reason. Thanks, I'd really appreciate it!

Well, first of all, I didn't apply to UOP.

If another choice is given to me, I would not apply UOP.

Sorry for UOP guys but I can highly recommend UCSF.

It will give you a lot of fun in the school.

UCSF has best faculty - both for research and clinic you can find in united states.

Oh further more, I am attending UCSF now.

Don't throw away your lotto.

I wish I had your predicament! 😛

Well, they are both equally great schools.

I have to say though... this is YOUR decision. Sometimes you can get some really bad advice from the wrong kind of student. For instance, I volunteered at the dental school and I cant tell you how many students told me to stay away from that school. And then I would hear from other people about how great the school was. (Got me nowhere)

You have visited both schools, you've had the chance to picture yourself going there... why dont you make a pros/cons list and see what matters the most to you.

I probably was not helpful at all, but the point is... YOU are the one who is going to spend the next 4 (or 3) years there.

I guess the only place I would direct you to go on this site is the DDS forums with current UoP & UCSF dental students. They might give you better insight.

Good luck

O that's right. No wonder you don't have time to decide; both schools just pulled you off from the waiting list. Congratulation.

UCSF is more research oriented and UOP is more clinical oriented.
Just go for the one that matches your personality the most.

I had this same decision to make about a little over a year ago. To be honest, coming into interviews I had already decided that UCSF was my top choice and I hadn't given UOP much of a chance. Then I interviewed at UOP. As you know, the interview blows you away. UOP is an amazing school. So after both interviews it was a toss up. UOP was even offering a large scholarship.

For me, the decision fell on what I want life to be like during dental school and after. During dental school I want the freedom and opportunity to participate in sports and city life while getting a top notch education. After dental school, I want the opportunity to specialize in any specialty that interests me.

I felt that UCSF would give me the better in-school life and as they have every dental specialty at UCSF, it might give a better ability to enter the various fields. UOP is great at specializing also, but doesn't have the same variety of programs/mentors available.

Recommendation, realize what is important to you and let that guide you to the school. Realize what parts of the interview days were a sales pitch and which reflect actual student life. Trust me, you'll be happy either way, and will probably know that you've made the right decision either way.

Good luck

uop is good, like UCSF. but UOP is simply great for older applicants who wanna be GPs and jump start their careers right after school. if you are just 22 and clueless about what you like in dentistry, then a more traditional 4-yr program would be a better fit for you.

I had to make the same choice when I was deciding where to go. A large part of it came down to which school I would feel the most comfortable at and would meet my needs. I think going into the application process, I was UCSF all the way. It's cheaper, has a better name, etc. But after visiting both schools and seeing the faculty/student interaction, and also the huge difference in how they treat potential applicants, I started to really think about what I wanted rather than what seemed the most "practical". I did my undergrat at Berkeley and honestly, the school whooped my ass. The atmosphere was just way too dependent on student self-motivation and knowing that probably wasn't me, I decided not to put myself through 4 more year of a UC education. UOP also offered me a little cash to go to their school, so it took a little bite out of the hefty price. Dental schools going to be busy where ever you go. And when UOP students ever claim to be busier, someone will always claim their school is even busier. I have no way of knowing since this is the only school I've attended.

Make a list of what you want to get from your education and see which school will fit the best for you. If you like research, better academics, and community service, UC might be for you. If you're interested in getting out in 3 years, a really kinda bend-over-backwards attitude by the faculty, or more clinically geared curriculum, come over to UOP. It really has to be your own decision, there's going to be pros and cons for choosing either school. If you have the time, I would really consider visiting both schools once more before deciding. Best of luck!

ps. feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions.

This is bad information. Didn't Dr. Bertolami clarify UCSF's dedication to training dental students and not researchers at the interview?

Go to UCSF unless you're pushing 30, it's cheaper and better.

I was interviewed at both. They are both great schools. UOP is a strong clinical school and have state of the art facilities. I also love the fact that you graduate in only three years which means alot financially. UCSF is research oriented and their facilities are a little old also their graduates are not very strong at getting into specialty programs. I am not going to either one but my choice would be UOP.

Good opinion, even though it not based in reality (you go to UOP... don't you?)

I know who you are Nothin2Do. Ha ha, caught ya. Go back to your UCSF studying, you biased first year. UOP is an absolutely fantastic school, with excellent clinical training and better Dental Boards pass rate and loan repayment percentages than UCSF, and a great faculty. My recommendation is UCSF if you want to specialize, educate or research, and UOP if you want to be a general dentist. 🙂

Thank you all for responding..i'm still a bit confused...especially since I Don't know if i want to specialize or not. 🙁
I've also made a pros and cons list, which still makes me indifferent

UOP:
- 3ys
** STONg clinical experience
- hard to specialize
- little bit more stress, due to the 3yr program
- 1 building
- UOP dental students come out very confident
- According to my dentist, which could be wrong - uop has a LITTLE better name in the dental field

UCSF:
- 4yr
- Emphasizes Academics and research
- little bit less stress, due to 4yr program plus the couple of hrs a wk to do whatever you want (study, volunteer, etc).
- Well-known publicly
- the "name", extra time in school, and pass - no pass system enabling you to get "better grades", are the reasons UCSF helps when students decide to specialize.

=)IF YOU DISAGREE, agree but want to expand OR HAVE MORE OPINIONS/INPUT, PLEASE POST AWAY !! thanx again
I still need all the input i can get....

happy but just a little bit stressed and frustrated..

Ha ha, shouldn't you be on the DAT board? Venturing all this way just for your propaganda. Does UOP have better passing rates? Never knew that. Anyways, my recommendation, being in Dental school already (ehhem), is to pick the school that has the coolest and best damn good looking students...UCSF 😛

I'm a big fan of UOP dental school!! I've taken maybe 6 tours and met with admissions many times. It's a great school esp. the students/faculty. However, I've only toured UCSF one time and it was great too. They're both great schools but I think my personality fits more at UOP. Ask students that attend both schools...hopefully you get a straight answer. I know most students at UOP are extremely happy. Anyways, I would love to be in your shoes given the choice to choose. GOOD LUCK!!!
