Hello!

I'm a PGY-1 and my program will let me spend up to $600 on textbooks. I'm having a hard time picking what Ophtho texts to buy. My Ophtho program will buy Wills Eye and the Boards Series.
I was going to buy Clinical Ophtho- Kanski (found a used copy for sale). But after that I am having a hard time prioritizing. Should I get Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology- Spalton. Or should I get a surgery text? If so which one? I also like Clinical Retina - Blodi, but is this necessary?
Lastly in another thread a PGY-2 recommended Spalton and Chern- Question/Review book...should that be on the top of my list?

I'm pretty clueless right now, so any help would be much appreciated.

A friend of mine walked into a peds practice and his partners were wondering why he didn't have any books. His response - the internet. It's true, there are many online resources that are better than most atlases (sp?), and usually more up to date. All the core info you need is in the BCSC series and Wills. I have Kanski's clincal ophthalmology, and it is very good, but I don't think I read it after PGY 1 year. Clinical Retina by Quillen is excellent, and you will get alot of milage out of it. I would look more into board review books, the gift that keeps on giving. A good review for the writtens is Review Questions in Ophthalmology by Chern and Wright, a new edition just came out last year (pretty much identical to the prior edition), so it won't change in the next 3-4 years. Many people get Ophthalmology Secrets which is very good, but I read it sparingly. Ophthalmology Review by Singh is good for the orals and has some good cases for general knowledge review. Everybody should have last minute optics, you use it every year the weekend before OKAPS, then the writtens, then the orals. Another decent review manual is Ophthalmology Review Manual, again by Chern. It is just bullet points and some pictures, but gives a good framework for most of Ophthalmology and has good differential diagnosis. There was a link rec. the Mass eye and ear review manual in Ophthalmology. I thought it was a waste of money. It was published in 1999, but the questions seem even more dated than that.
