Does anyone know whether both lobes of the pituitary gland are derived from the Ectoderm, or whether it is the Anterior Pituitary derived from the Endoderm and the Posterior Pituitary is derived from the Ectoderm?

just memorize nervous system comes from ectoderm. BOOM. you know the answer. obviously both parts of the pituitary are part of the nervous system, soooo....

SIDENOTE: notochord is from mesoderm because it induces the neural plate or whatever to form into the nervous system during neurulation.

The posterior pituitary releases hormones through neural innervation, and is actually considered more like nervous tissue (though its obviously in the endocrine system). The anterior pituitary on the other hand is considered more like endocrine tissue than the posterior and releases hormones after hormonal stimulation from the hypothalamus.


Unless I'm completely wrong that is...

you're completely accurate in that assessment of function. I don't know about the nominal shift in tissue categorization though...
What's pretty cool though is that the anterior pit. migrated up from another part of the body during embryological development (thus further enforcing the need for hormonal--and not neural--stimulation from the hypothalamus, to activate); and thats all the detail i can muster up without resorting to wiki 😳
