Hey all,
I have just recently decided to go the DO track for medical school. However, I'm interested in specializing (most likely cardiology), but I definitely don't want to be family practice. I was wondering if anyone has any idea of some of the DO schools with the best matches for specialties. I realize that many DO schools churn out primary-cary docs by the dozen, but where should I apply if I don't want to do that?

Thanks a ton!

No matter which DO school you attend, you will be trained as a general practitioner. I have heard that some schools push students into family practice, but if this isn't what you have your heart set on, you can definitely specialize. To specialize in cardiology, you must first do your residency in internal medicine and then a fellowship in cardiology. Internal med is a primary care area with several subspecialties. So, osteopathic medicine is a good route for you to pursue. Best of luck.

Being that Cardiology is a "branch" of Internal Medicine, and that IM is a primary care field I think going to a D.O. school is a very good fit. Also the further down the road you get, the less important your past accomplishments/screwups become. So just shine during you IM residency and you'll get that Cardio fellowship. Best of luck.

If cardiology is your goal then you need to get into a strong internal medicine program and do well! Virtually any DO school will fit the bill.To get into a highly regarded residency program your grades, recs and board scores will be the determining factor.
