I was hoping some current dental students out there could help me with my decision. I was accepted to both Stony Brook and UMDNJ and I am torn between them. Why did you chose the school you're in? Did anyone out there get accepted to both? If so, why did you chose one over the other.

I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

If you wouldn't mind public posting, could you post it? I would also love to hear, and I'm sure others would as well. Thanks for the input!

hey guys!

We'll, i don't have any secrets that will blow anyone away...but i'll voice my opinions.

When I first went to visit SB, I immediately thought to myself that this is a place i would like to spend the next 4+ years at. The environment seemed to be the perfect fit for me, both in location and student body. The faculty and staff members that I had met came off as being very friendly and accomodating. Everyone from the secretary to the admissions officers had big juicy smiles on their faces - of course, this couldnt possibly be a deciding factor, but it contributed to the positive impression i had during my stay. I like the small class size and the fact that students are not ranked. I want to develop good relationships with my classmates and professors and I believe that I would have a good chance of that at SB. I think that the challenging basic medical science curriculum with medical students is great. I have enjoyed the basic sciences in college and I've learned to appreciate what they have to offer. When i mentioned to a friend of mine who goes to SB medical that I was seriously considering SB, he highlighted the fact that some of his best friends are in the dental program. He said that the combined curriculums has helped build solid friendships and organize great study groups. Moving over to the dental related curriculum, i was really impressed with the clinics and labs. It appears that the students get a lot of individualized attention. I don't know which kind of cases are more likely to roll through at SB...but im going to do some more homework on the clinical aspect. I certainly see SB having a good balance of the medical sciences and clinical experience, which is exactly what i'm looking for. I got the impression that research opportunities are always available (the benefit of a state-funded school) I'm unsure how stony brook students do on the boards as a whole, but i'd imagine they'd do very well, providing solid post-grad opportunities. My oral surgeon, although he didnt go to stony brook (his school closed down) has always spoken highly of their program. When a dental school student at another interview asked me where else i was applying, as soon as I mentioned stony brook...she said that she worked with stony brook students during an externship and her words were exactly "i was very impressed at how well stony brook students were prepared". At another school, a 4th year student looked me straight in the eye and firmly said stony brook students know their stuff. Opinions should be taken with a grain of salt, but it's nice to hear feedback from other students. The tuition makes SB even more attractive.

Of course, dental school is what you make of it. I believe that you can come out of any dental school and be a well-rounded professional. UMDNJ is an awesome school too. I'm considering UMDNJ and uconn(if i get in) as state schools and possibly columbia (if i get in) as a private school. I'm learning more and more about the schools with each passing day, and i plan on visiting a few of my top choices during winter break. A bunch of my friends are dentists, so im going to continually keep in touch with them throughout these next few months.

Bottom line, we'll all get accepted and go to excellent schools. Each program has their ups and downs, but i believe we'll make the right decisions. You guys can shoot me an IM at nikedude21 anytime!

Back to the histology lab...phhaaaaat...
later guys!

Dec. 31, but it's only $350 and it's refundable until March...

OH OK THANKS! So i heard that the 2nd round of acceptances are sent after the New Year, but I'm wondering around how many acceptances were sent out to date? Because some people are saying they got accepted to Stony in this thread. However, they have not posted their acceptances in the acceptance thread. DO you guys know how many were accepted in the first round?

I vaguely remeber hearing, but don't remember where and thus cannot confirm the source, that somewhere between 7 and 15 where accepted on dec. 1. but then again, i could just be making that number up. however, i'm fairly sure they didn't fill up the class.

Is anyone considering UMDNJ over SB?

i wish i had the choice of even considering the former or the latter. lol :scared:

I recently spoke to a DS3 student and he told me that there aren't that many cases, and the pateint pool is not how he would want it to be. This was kind of dissappointing. On the ohter hand I know a DS3 student in UMDNJ who told me that they are exposed to great clinical cases and UMDNJ has a great patient pool for one reason due to the area that is insufficient in health care. So clinically, I think that UMDNJ is much better. 😎

In the first sentence, you meant a DS3 at SB, right?

Yes bfp, I meant Stony Brook. I was trying to type fast. Sorry about that. 🙄

No apology necessary. Happy for that information. Did you ask these students during interviews? Or are they people you know? This is just the kind of info that I was looking for! Thank you.

These Are People That I Personally Know. Not Students Who Are Asked To Give Positive Information About The School. :d

Any other info like that about either school? What they don't like (other than the patient thing)? Competitiveness? Relationships with faculty? etc?

I don't know much about SB cause I didn't I apply there, but I can tell you why I already made up my mind for UMDNJ. Only reason I applied there to start with was because one of my good friend (from Jersey) told me a lot of good things about the school. So I applied and got an interview invite there. I didn't know a thing about the school when I went there, and the way they presented the school to me was just awesome. First of all, they have the most friendly environment out of all three schools I interviewed at so far (USC, Boston). I checked out their patient pool and it was just awesome, patients just line up there everyday. Boston had problem with availability of the chair cause they over accept students. Clinically, it's one of the best school you could go to in my opinion. It was also the only school where the students and the faculty had the same opinion about the school. I guess what i'm trying to say is that the recruiters had nothing to hide. They showed all the pros and cons of the school and they were very honest about it. Students were all happy there and when you factor in the tuition, it gets even better since it's public school. I don't know, I know there will be people reading this and tell me I'm wrong and all that but in my opinion, anyone could be happy at UMDNJ and you will learn everything you need to know as a dentist there. Hope this helps. Take care.

Also, another thing I don't really like about SB is that they are constantly "on" the students. The profs know your name by the first week of school, so not showing up to class with be a huge minus. You basically ahve to be on your best due to the very small class size because if you're not everyone knows. At my SB interview the student who was talking to us told us that everyone knows everything about your whole life in that school. You can't run or hide form the students nor the professors. lol

Well, RedBullMan, for what it's worth, all of this clinic talk has swayed me to UMDNJ. Guess I'll be seeing you there in August.

bumpity bump bump...

the deadline for the UMDNJ deposit is becoming visible, ahhhhh...:scared:

does anyone else have any thoughts on the subject?

Stony Brook all the way!! I've spoken to a few SB students and they all said great things about the school.

My UMDNJ deadline passed on 12/31. Let the good times in LI begin.

-See you all there.

oh my GOD !!!!!! stony brook ?
i go to stony brook for undergrad but let me tell u the dental school is one of the best dental school in USA , it only accepts 30 people any ways its very hard to get in to it , i know my friends going there , they love it , its a very small school , like a family , some one said when u get out of school u are actually a dentist
but let me tell u about the city 😀
its deaddddddddddd
its a like a village boring
🙂)
and the size of dental school is smaller than any of your college bulidings but if if i were u , i would defently go to it!!!!!!!!!!11

I thought UMDNJ gave you 45 days?

It depends on if you got a scholarship or not etc.. for UMDNJ.. mine says that the deposit is due 45 days after the DATE of the letter! (dated Dec 1st) so January 15th! I am putting a deposit down there,,,while I wait for SB.. and then will make a decision.. if I don't get into SB then I'm DEF going to UMDNJ....If I Get into SB, then I will have a HARD DECISION TO MAKE.. Both schools ARE REALLLLLLLY TERRIFIC!!!!!!!! I would be THRILLED to attend either one... both have fantastic facilities, great professors... thumbs up for EITHER of 'em! 👍

Chris, hope to see you at SB!

I went out and revisted SB last week and it was awesome. Even had a chance to talk to some students .. let's just say that after going there again, making my mind up was a lot easier.

I think there is plenty to do in LI.. Port Jefferson looks nice a nice place; SB has beaches; Connecticut is a ferry ride away.. Hamptons; wine country; NYC is like an hour by car 1.5 hrs by train.

For me, locatioin was the definite selling point. Ghetto vs. burbs. An easy battle if you ask me. Both schools are great. I really liked UMDNJ and if it were not for SB I would go there over every other school I got into.

I was a little worried about not having enough patients in yr 1 & 2 at SB but as far as I hear that is totally not an issue -- you have access to more patients that you can handle.

Good luck with all your decisions.
