This sounds trivial, but as a female pre-dent student who will hopefully (cross my fingers) start interviewing soon, I'm not sure what to wear. And I have been unable to find anything for women-just on men! (Am i not looking hard enough?)

Can some women who have been through it help me out?

I was thinking of just getting one of those nice cute pant suits from a store like Limited and then some plain color nice shirts underneath that.
Also, low heels or boots?

I don't want to sound ditzy, but little things like that can make a difference in how you are perceived!

Thanks!! 🙂

Hey Mango!

I wore suits to my interviews because I felt most comfortable and put together in a suit. Both suits I wore were black, because I think its simple, classic and easy to wear, however, choose what makes you feel most comfortable. My winter suit was kind of a heavier wool blend pant suit with wide legs. I wore it with a black and white striped button down. In the spring I wore a black, mid-calf length skirt suit in a lighter fabric with a pink button down. I tried to stay simple but not compromise my style. Just make sure the fit is good and you don't feel uncomfortable in whatever you are wearing. As far as shoes go, with both suits I wore a low square-heeled, square toed black, leather shoe. I left the kick-ass pointy sling backs at home figuring it was better to stay on the conservative side. Oh, also, part of the reason that I chose black is because I hate skin-toned hose. I wore black hose and didn't feel that it was too risque. Some people aren't comfy with black hose, but I didn't see it as being a problem at the interview.

If you are in a fairly conservative suit, you can't go wrong. Good luck!

I used to interview people for my company(Fortune 500), and I can tell you that the easiest piece of advice that I learned is to look "Republican". That means wear conservative colors (black or blue) and preferably a suit. Low heels are preferred over boots. People that look well put-together can really make a positive impresion. You would be suprised how many people don't know how to dress for interviews. THe ones that do know how to dress well immediately make a positive impression. Also, avoid gaudy jewelry, nose-rings, eye brow rings etc. If you have really long hair, put it up somehow.

For guys, that means don't wear red ties with your suits. Get a haircut and if you must have really long hair, put it in a ponytail.

And don't worry schools will appreciate your individuality. But for the sake of the interview, they will appreciate the fact that you make the effort to dress conservatively for them.

Best of Luck

If you go to the east coast in the winter, get a sleeveless cashmere sweater. It's warm, and thin, and looks nice under the suit. Make sure you have your hair nicely tied up in pony tail like mcataz suggested. Also, clean, short nails. Bring floss with you and floss after lunch.

Have fun.

These previous posts have been of great help. Another question I have is regarding the dress shirt to be worn inside the suit jacket. I bought this one dress shirt that looks quite nice...it has collar, button down, and is dark/light/white large diameter vertical stripes on it. I figure the thin stripes might be a little too much for a shirt. But the stripes on this shirt are very wide so its not too bold. The color of purple is pretty muted, not bright at all. Do you think this is acceptable?

Also, are necklaces acceptable as well? What size?

thanks girls!

I think necklaces are just fine... as long as they dont look like this..

I believe what you described sounds very nice. Also a necklace is a very nice accessory, just make sure it's not very noticeable like the post above this one. Make yourself look conservative and professional. Here's a website I found for you. http://www.quintcareers.com/dress_for_success.html
You might find it helpful. Good luck!!

LetMein, Ha....Thanks for the visual example. I bet if I wore that necklace, they would doubt my sincerity in saying that my interest in dentistry is primarily to help other

Thanks wimmcs for the comment on the shirt I bought. I also went to Express to look at suits jackets, and oddly, all they had was a traditionally black one but the length of it was perhaps 1 foot longer than the waist. Its very contemporary style, and I love it! but I fear perhaps it would be too "stylish"?

I looked at Express and the Limited for my suit.
I noticed they have many contemporary suts. I would stay away from them and just stick with being conservative.
I do not think it's a big deal, but it's just better to be safe than sorry. Have fun shopping.
