Hello,
Here is my situation:

I am a Canadian UG student in Ontario. I am in my 4th year of my degree... my first year I had a 1.7 GPA and a bunch of withdrawals for various reasons.. Since then, my GPA is 3.9+. I also wrote the MCAT and received a 523 which I am extremely happy about CONSIDERING I AM AN ARTS STUDENT!!!!

I do not have the science pre-reqs but am going to take them after fourth year in a pre-med year.

I really want to go to a good US med school.. what do I do.. Do I have a chance?

HELP!

Thanks

Let me get this straight. You are an arts major, haven't taken a single pre-requisite, and managed to score in the 99th percentile on the MCAT? If this doesn't scream troll, I don't know what does.

I took first year Bio and Chem.. but did poorly. I took AP physics in highschool which was more than enough. My CARS came easily due to all the reading in my arts degree and lets be honest psych/soc just takes raw hours...

You “wrote” the MCAT, why the heck didn’t you get a 528? That makes you kinda dumb right?

Hahah, was not aware saying using the term "wrote" in the context of taking an exam was not common down south..

Anyhow, I'd really like to know whether the medical schools in the US will adjust my GPA at all? For example, in Canada some schools drop your lowest year, or they only take your two most recent etc..

They won’t adjust it but if it’s only one bad year then your gpa shouldn’t be too low for the cutoff. With that MCAT, and As in all the prerequisites, I wouldn’t worry about your grades.

You’re still international so I would rock other parts like clinical and non clinical volunteering. It isn’t all about grades remember that.

Bad GPA, only took biology and general chemistry, art major, and got a 523 on the MCAT. Do you also have some beach property up in Canada that you want to sell us?

Hahah, I do not really think the fact I got a 523 as an arts student is that insane.. like I said I took AP physics and took firstyear bio/chem.. also took a 3 month MCAT prep course last summer.

I really don’t know why people are shocked. The MCAT is prepped outside the class. A good example are non traditional students who were out of undergrad for a decade. It’s not like they remember organic chemistry lol.

It's an impressive score no matter how you justify it. Congratz

As for your original question, just do what LizzyM said, take your pre-reqs, apply to international friendly schools, and you'll be golden. Make sure you get some ECs as well

Thanks guys. I am assuming there are many threads on here regarding Canadian friendly schools... will check em' out, eh.

Thanks

Hey thanks! I did not mean to be a troll at all with this post - even with my MCAT im not super competitive in Canada as my bad grades are super detrimental...

What are some high end schools I could be competitive at? Are we talking ivy or am I absolutely delusional?

If your GPA for all course work to date is at least a 3.5 you are not likley to be screened out of the top schools. Whether you are Ivy material will depend having had a least a taste of research experience, some clinical exposure, and some community service experience. Being a team player and having leadership qualities helps too. Two biggest impediments I've seen with Canadian applicants are: lack of shadowing experience (not a thing in Canada, I've been told) and letters of recommendation that seem lukewarm (Canadians don't brag about themselves and don't brag about their protégés or students either, it seems).
