I'm a 3rd yr pre-med student and i'm unsure about going into medicine. I known every med student have been ask this question time after time " why do you want to be a physician?" I just want your opinion. I?m going in to medicine because I think the human body is interesting and I like science. I don?t see myself doing law or teaching or accounting ?etc. but I don?t think my reason is good enough. Which makes me question myself. And then there is medical school. I don?t feel like going through another 4 years of school. I lost my motivation and maybe your reasons for going into this field can bring it back. Can someone help me out please? I need your advice.

If you are pre-med and having doubts, I suggest you wait a while before applying to medical school. Do some travelling, see the world, do some different types of jobs. If you find you still are interested (or not interested) in medicine, this time to find yourself will not be wasted at all. There are plenty of jobs that involve the human body and science that are not medicine and do not require the same sacrifices.

I will say this: you have to really love to learn to be in this field. It is a constant barrage of information and if you resent studying and learning you will be an unhappy camper, because it continues throughout your career--it never really ends. That's one of the things I love about it, but then, I get a real charge out of learning.

Good luck!

Well said Sophie.

I find that when I start to get burnt out, shadowing really lights the fire under me again. I'm not doing medicine to study all night, or jump through hoops (although you gotta be willing to do a lot of that); I'm doing it to work with patients. For me, shadowing gives a taste of the light at the end of the tunnel.

Best of luck,
S.

Being a physician is all about working with people. If this is something that you don't enjoy doing, look into some fields were you just deal with the science (i.e. epidemiology, PhD or Masters programs in physiology etc.). I agree with SJ and others, get some clinical experience under your belt--that is the meat and potatoes of medicine. Also, find a creative outlet, something you can do that doesn't require a whole lot of left brain power.
Cheers

Keep in mind that you can go through 4 years of medical school and do things like pathology and anesthetics which don't require as much patient interaction. It's also normal to hit a wall your junior year, especially if the rest of your friends are taking business courses (and ect.) that might not be quite as demanding as science courses that you happen to be taking. Everybody has different motivations for what they do, as long as you justify to yourself that your reasoning is how you really feel, then it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Definetly take some time off though if you really arent' sure, most of the medical schools aren't going anywhere🙂 Good luck.

Wow what a question... I asked myself that same thing... let see in 2nd year undergrad... then I swore to give up in 3rd year.. and finally 4th year. Then.. drifted off and did languages for a year.. then got into law school.. but then I realized I liked what I was doing.. so came back to do a Masters in medical sciences.. and swore at all of that since I had a tough time with Prof and BS.. when I finished I promissed myself I would not get involved in medical field. Somehow I got drunk and fell into a PhD medical cardiology research... 3 years later.. I am going to do a DO.

I agree with Sophie... I went away and did other things.. and finally found my way back to this field. You have to know what you are getting into.

This can't be something that your parents want you to do.. or vision of glory and fame. I think I can say (I work in a Hospital with many physicians)... and other may repeat.. that this lifestyle is not as easy as others. Most don't realize that other fields are easier and make more money.. yess.. more money! If you are 21 and pondering Medicine.. then take your time. Make sure you have all the required courses now... in case you change your mind. Then take it easy and make up your mind.
