Help! It feels like I'm losing everything!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My family consists of me and both my parents. My father is a physician and he lost his license. My mother is disabled but received no disability/unemployment checks. Now, I have to quit school and work full-time at a shoe-store so I can help pay the mortgage.. He used to make over 200K a year, and now we are legit left with nothing but unpaid bills, bills, bills.

Sorry if I'm ranting, but for the love of God, I have a 4.0 GPA and a 35 MCAT at a competitive university, and I was planning to apply to med school in June... WELL, NOT ANYMORE.

I've been in this position before. I hate to say it, but I would finish college and apply. If you need to join the military or something like that that will pay for school and give you a stipend. Your parents may have to downsize. But you are an adult, you need to understand you are not responsible for what happened to your parents. Its ok to help them, but you should never have to give up on your dreams for them. Good luck OP I hope everything gets better no matter what you decide to do.

This thread in my opinion is bs. If you had a 35MCAT and a 4.0GPA, you would damn sure go ahead and attend med school on scholarships and grants. I'm telling you, there are a lot of people out there wanting a score/GPA like that, don't waste it. Take care and no offense intended.

Thank you for weighing in on this situation.

And, no guys, this is not spam..

Dude, F that, get loans and apply to med school. Why did your dad lose his license? Shouldn't that be more of your dad's problem? Don't be stupid, go to med school and send him to work at shoe store. You can help them out later when you start making $$👍

Lies. Your dad lost his license? He was probably doing dodgy stuff. Your mom doesn't get disability? Hard to believe. But the best one is that your dad used to make $200k and you have to get a job at a shoe store to pay the bills. A SHOE STORE. You are gonna make, what, $10/hour? And this is going to cover the mortgage and bills? No way. Maybe your dad's $200k should have been better spent. And why are you financially responsible for your parents and the crazy bad financial decisions they apparently made.

Not buying it.

Hit them with money from your student loans. It will be a lot more than you would make working at a shoe store.

It's just that our mortgage is expensive.. It's literally over 4K a month, and not to mention taxes and insurance on the house and cars, undergrad tuition, food, gas, etc.

To hell with my father and his stupid mistakes, but it's my mother who I feel badly for. She is disabled, and if I wouldn't stop feeling guilty if I ever leave her.

Either move in a direction where you are going to succeed on your own, or be prepared to face the consequences of going down on a sinking ship.

To add more to this. You can join the military or take out the loans you need to pay for your education from the government and from private lenders to cover all your application costs (including traveling ect.) It will be expensive, but you have solid stats and with all other parts of the application being strong you are likely to be accepted to at least one school. At that point you are going to be paying for loans anyway and will be set up for an amazing career. Please don't work in a shoe store, you've come very far and are obviously intelligent, you need to make this dream come true for yourself, don't let your family bring you down.

Educated people shouldn't work at shoe stores. What's the point of all the classes you took in college then?

why not downsize and sell the house?

.... Have you ever worked at one of these places while in college?

I used to work at a sporting goods store and there were plenty of college grads who worked with me.

College does not guarantee a "real" college-degree worthy job.

Your parents need to sell the house and move into something more affordable 1000-1500/mo. Your dad should be looking for a career/job alternative and you should be focused on applying. No matter what, don't put your medical career on the back seat. I know it sucks and you want to help out your mom and everything, but I seriously think by applying to med school/getting in this year is going to be the best way you could help them and yourself especially. As somebody said above, you will not be making very much at the shoe store. Once you start med school, you will have loan money and I bet the amount available per month will be bigger than you would have made in the shoe store. Please take our advice and go to med school:xf:🙂

You should consider applying in June.

As plumazul linked:

I took some advanced calc classes during high school and unfortunately received a D in one class (long story short-I was going through major family crises that semester, went to therapy, and I barely went to class.). I am currently in my sophomore year in a private university in new york city and I am thinking of applying to med school but the thought of having the grade avged into my BCPM is extremely discouraging.
I currently have a stellar gpa and am doing well in all of my classes. I realize I will never be able to attain that 4.0 bcpm (due to that calc class); however, how badly will it reflect on me throughout the admissions process?
I am planning on retaking that class to prove that I am capable of handling the material.
How would prestigious med schools view this?

First world problems.

OP, you'll be fine. Sounds like your just fishing for some compliments here.

People these days, and you(Newyork3) think that we are going to compliment your "35MCAT and 4.0GPA". GTFO of here and go apply to some med schools. Or, just go work at the damn shoe store. Ridiculous.

Maybe he mentioned his stats to illustrate how hard he has worked? Have some sympathy.

OP, don't let your work go to waste. Take out some loans, or get some credit cards, and get into medical school!

I think it is even less believable that the shoe store would pay $10 an hour.

If someone is that intelligent to have a perfect GPA and a stellar MCAT score, they wouldn't be asking on SDN if they should work at a SHOE STORE.

OP, just by chance you are not spamming and/or a troll, I am going to respond.

First, know that my thoughts are with you. The situation sounds truly awful for everyone involved and I can imagine that it is extraordinarily painful for you. In the midst of such an exciting time in your life, it is incredibly unfair that have been faced with all of this. As the months go on, ensure that you are receiving adequate emotional and social support -- from family, friends and, perhaps, a counselor (most universities provide such services free of charge).

That said, your parents are not your responsibility. While I do not know what your father did that would cause his licensed to be revoked, those mistakes weigh on his shoulders and he should be spending his time looking into alternative career paths, no matter how unglamorous they may seem to him. Your mother also needs to apply -- or, as it may be, reapply -- for disability as soon as possible. If she did not do so previously due to your father's income, or if she was denied due to his income, the situation has [obviously] changed and those checks will become a life line. If she does not qualify due to having too many assets, those -- savings, 401ks, what have you -- must now be utilized to help your family move forward and/or make ends meet until they can figure something else out. Your parents should also be looking into applying for government aid of some sort. Many states have Temporary Emergency Assistance programs, which will also help. Your parents will, furthermore, have to downsize. They need to sell the house and start for looking for other living arrangements. Either that be a [much] smaller house or a rental home or apartment, it must be done.

But, as I stated, none of this is your responsibility. While you can certainly choose to go home and work, understand that a) you will not make enough money in a shoe store to come close to compensating for your father's lost income and b) though wanting to help your mother is admirable, you also have a responsibility to take care of yourself. Your parents are adults and, though you can help them, they must also be the ones to take steps to fix this, not lean on you to pick up after their mistakes. That and, in the long run, going forward with your medical career as quickly as possible will allow you to help them more than any job at a shoe store ever could. As for actually paying for medical school, do what those without support and/or from low-middle income families do: take out loans. A lot of them.

And, for what it is worth, though my situation is quite different from yours, I do understand feeling as if you have lost everything and am going through that currently, as well. Ultimately, you just have to keep moving forward, as that is all you really can do.

I'm not buying it either.

Shoe store? Really?

Educated people shouldn't work at shoe stores. What's the point of all the classes you took in college then?

In this economy, there are plenty of college grads working at shoe stores, starbucks, and bath and body works. If you think a college degree guarantees a job for "educated people", you might want to take a look at current stats...just saying...

Maybe he mentioned his stats to illustrate how hard he has worked? Have some sympathy

Maybe OP mentioned his stats to get some attention......

I'm going to go out on a limb and say OP is trolling....That job at the shoe store isn't going to come close to touching a $4,000/month mortgage. Even if you were the manager of the store. Let alone pay for gas, food, etc. Someone with a 4.0 and 35 MCAT (even IF you got a D in HS) would have the intellect to see that.

If OP is working at a shoe store in attempt to save his family, that's ridiculous. He went to college, he should find an employer desiring the skills he learned in college. Especially if he's good enough to apply for an MD. Otherwise he just wasted a bunch of money and might as well have worked at said shoe store right out of college.

Agree, your father did not have any investment, savings, real estate, etc....
A downgrade is definately needed, one bedroom apt in a cheap area then your father could pay all the bills and you should be apply to complete college and go to medical school with the assist of loans and schloarships.

this is some ridiculous sympathy baiting

Thank you. I checked this at lunch, and absolutely couldn't believe people continued to give advice concerning OP's "situation" and how his "father" was responsible for the "family's troubles". HE's A TROLL! Haha. That was proven many posts ago.
