I'm a Dentist in my homland (Colombia), but for reasons not relevant, I live in the U.S. now. So, I find myself starting from scratch again if I intend to continue my career. Right now I've been preparing for the Hygenist License, but all the four times I took it I have come up short by about 5 to 10 points. I fear that I may NOT be using the right tools to get ready. CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A GOOD PREP TOOL (i.e. practice exams, CD, etc) that can help me out. Otherwise, I may have to think about giving it up.

🙁

Thanks for the information. Got a question: what does MOD stand for? Is a requirement on their website to be able to register.

🙁

Maybe this has something to do with why the US is somewhat strict about letting FMGs work here.

Why on earth are you trying to get your hygienist license if you were a dentist in Colombia? At the very least, take the US dental exams and go into Perio if you want to die with a scaler in your hand.

i truly agree with omfscards fan..when you already have studied dentistry why are you goin for dental hygiene..prepare for dds..i wonder whats special about dental hygiene when you already have a degree in dentistry and you can prepapre for dds..gear up and get the licensure ..take teh exams and practise dentistry..good luck

Because he can take the hygiene boards in FL and if he passes he's got a license.
In order for him or any other DDS with a foreign degree (like me) to get licensed they have to go back to school for at least 2 more years in the US . That's why.

a dentist who can't pass a hygienist board exam????!!!! you gotta agree with toofache32 here. this is the reason why you have to go to dental school here to practice dentistry here - you can't just pass the board exams and go at it.
we have several faculty members who have a BDS. not sure where it came from, but it seems to be a dental degree from somewhere is europe. these faculty members all have DDS degrees from our school. the dean of our school has a BDS, but not a DDS (or DMD). he couldn't practice dentistry without going through a dental school here.

we have a woman who is a dentist in africa in my class. she is horrible. she is considered a 3rd year student, but is not seeing pts because she is still re-taking simple classes like fixed pros and operative dentistry (the lab/practical portions of the classes). she was horrible in endo and morphology waxing labs as well.
i wouldn't trust her to polish my teeth with a prophy cup.
the sad thing is, she is 38 years old and has been re-taking courses for a few years. she was considered part of the class ahead of me, now she is with our class.
they obviously not learn much dentistry in african dental schools.

Dammmn, tough crowd! S/RP is much harder than it seems, you know!

If you say that to one particular professor in my school, he would recommend you to chose other careers!
I would look at the board result to see where my weakness is. Whether didactic or clinical skills, or both, and then go from there. Ask a dental office to see if you can shadow, assist an experienced hygienist. Learn from them.

A foriegn trained dentist can take the hygiene exams in Florida and then practice dentistry or hygiene? I'd rather do all four years over again than spend the rest of my days cleaning up ****. There was a guy in my class from Argentina that was retaking some classes and doing the clinic requirements. He smoked through everything because he had already been doing it for years. I'm just not getting it, I guess...

no, he can't practice dentistry w/o going through dental school in the u.s. he can only be a hygienist by passing the hygiene board exam.

There was a dentist from Columbia in my hygiene school class. Of course she breezed through everything, even in a second language. But she couldn't just take the hygiene board and practice here in TN, she had to go through an accredited dental hygiene school and graduate to get her liscense.

This person is just making up some story to get everyone here riled. There's no way that a foreign trained dentist (who can type so well in English and has taken a hygiene board 4 times) doesn't know what MOD stands for. I don't buy it.

I don't think it's fair to stereotype "African dental schools" because of your experience with one dentist from one of the 53+ countries. Sure, things might be done a little differently due to economics or lower value for esthetics.

There are 2 really good prep books for the Hygiene exam that I know of, one is by Mosby I know and I can't think of who wrote the other, sorry. I'm sure you can type NDHB prep into amazon.com's search engine and find something.
