I just finished a post-bac program at the end of May, and am looking for a job before hopefully entering in 2011. How should I answer secondary app questions about how I'm spending my time?

We all know the economy sucks and it could be a while before I find a job. I am continuing my volunteer activities, but even if I ramp them up, I could only account for about 10 hours per week that way, right now, and if I add too many activities I won't have time to look for a job.

Please advise on how to spin this.

Thanks!

I would say exactly what you said here - that you're going to actively pursue a job doing X where you hope to learn X, X, and X. In addition and concurrently, you will continue volunteering/etc... I think that admissions committees are going to be understanding of the fact that it might take some time to find a job. Once you find a job and you've spent some time there, you might consider sending an update letter to the schools.

I feel for you. I'm currently working 20 hrs/wk at my research job and I'm sending my resume to various types of jobs in LA to fill up my time. Before now I was taking classes at night so I was busier, but now I'm dying for something to fill the rest of my time and earn money for med school.

I'm thinking of writing something about my current work in my lab and including something like "I am actively searching for a second position in a clinical setting." I think the adcoms should know that finding a good job isn't a cakewalk right now, but I also think it would be seen as making an excuse if one were to put "on account of the poor economy" in their secondary.

Good luck with the job hunt!
