Hey all, my wife and I are living in Philadelphia for a year while I do my medical internship before we move to Michigan. She hopes to apply to vet school in the next year or so, and is hoping to gain some experience while here in Philadelphia. We've been looking for jobs, research and volunteer opportunities, but feel limited since we don't know the area (Texans) and she doesn't have tech certification.

Can anyone offer any ideas with experience that they've had? Good vets to contact in the area?

Thanks for your help.

philly is my hometown and i miss it, i think you'll have a great time there. anyway, she should try volunteering at UPenn's emergency room (i think there may be info on their site -- you can try calling them). as far as work, i just sent my resume and a cover letter around to as many vet clinics as i could and i was offered a few interviews. i ended up working for a doctor in my neighborhood who was fantastic and wrote me a really great recommendation for vet school.

Hey there, I'm from the Philly area too and finished all of my animal experience in the area. She could definately look into the Philly zoo, Elmwood Park Zoo, and the Academy of Natural Science internship programs -they are usually flexible in hours and a lot of fun. I've heard Adventure Aquarium's internships aren't as good. Also try the shelters, I'm sure she could get a job there but definitely not as fun (try Montgomery County as well as Philadelphia County shelters). Also, working at the Penn hospital is a great idea, I knew a guy who did that and he liked it very much. As far as research goes, there's tons of animal labs in the area - you could try the university's first (Temple, Drexel, UPenn etc. etc.) and then go for company's who have animal labs (sorry can't think of any off the top of my head - I know there are some located in Horsham). To get clinical experience, I just called up those listed in the phonebook, asked for their fax numbers, and sent them a resume and cover letter.
