So here is my particular situation:
overall gpa 2.5
science gpa??? but close to 2.5
no mcat but studying and want to take it in April. Also have orgo II still left to take
i have some medical experience
but what do I do?

I wanted to apply to smp's but don't know that I could even get in to any of them.

so now im starting to feel hopeless because I really don't want to go to an FMS but I don't even think they'd take me. So anyone with experience have any advise for me???

What you probably want to do:

1) Excel on the MCAT. At least 32+, probably 34+

2) Take more undergraduate science classes, and get As in them, to get both your GPA and your science GPA to a 2.75 or more. Retake any core premedical class you've gotten a D or F in.

3) Apply to, get into, and excel in an SMP

4) Go to medical school.

Keep in mind that your MCAT score will expire 2 years after you get it, and an SMP takes a year, so you really need to get that stellar MCAT score after you get your GPA up to a 2.75.

Other Options:

1) Skip the SMP. Retake the classes where you've gotten your lowest grades and get As. Shadow a doctor of osteopathy and get a letter of recommendation DO schools will use your most recent grade in a class, so this can cause your GPA to rise pretty fast. When you get to about a 3.2 that GPA, plus that stellar MCAT we discussed, will probably get you in.

2) Skip the SMP and maybe the extra undergraduate classes too. Do well on the MCAT and you can probably get into one of the less competitive Caribbean schools right now. Be careful, since the Caribbean schools fail a lot of people out. If you're not sure if you can get in call their admissions committe: unlike US MD and DO admissions committees, they'd be happy to talk to you and figure out what you need to do to get in. I think SABA is the easiest to matriculate into right now? Anyway start talking to them, not us.

In case you...

1) Fail the MCAT: You're either taking it over or finding another career

2) Screw up the SMP: You're finding another career.

fedwantsdo?

(I'm kidding:laugh:, Perrotfish offered solid advice. Take it one step at a time and right now just worry about doing well on the MCAT and raising your GPA)

Thanks for the advise. The only thing is that I graduated this December from college so I don't know how many undergrad courses I want to take. FMS is my last resort. But if I do well on the MCATs do you think I have a chance of getting into an SMP? Which ones do I stand a chance of getting into? Anyone know of SMPs that will take someone like me?

I guess you can never know until you try, but 2.5 is on the low end even for SMPs.

Point is, if you want to do MD or DO in the US, you are going to have to take/retake some undergrad classes.

Also, it is my opinion that the competitiveness of SMPs is increasing as more and more people learn about them.

Guys, I had a quick question regarding the Drexel post baach program (DPMS). Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was a bit confuzed on the supplemental info part where they ask about your extra curricular activities, health related fields, etc. They mention to answer the questions in paragraph form, and then to answer in essay form ??? Has anyone applied to the DPMS program before and can help me; thank you so much !!!

Maybe VCU would take you with a truely stellar MCAT score, but their success rates are pretty low. Honestly any program that would take you with a 2.5 probably doesn't have the kind of success rate you're looking for. Also do you have any reason to think you're going to do that well on the MCAT? 35+ scores are pretty rare even amoung the straight A crowd. Call some SMP adcoms to ask (other than Georgetown their mostly friendly), but chances are you're either going to be taking a year or two more of Undergraduate coursework or going to the Caribbean.
