Hi, I got into four dental schools this year. Boston Uni., U of Pitt, Temple, and U of TN. I was happy that I got in, but I now got to make this painful decision in 10 days. I thought Temple was ok, but I didn't like the surrounding area. So far BU and UPitt both seem to have better surrounding area. U of TN is pretty cheap. But I am kinda leaning toward BU and UPitt. Both schools seem to have descent facilities, and the dental students were all friendly to talk to. Which school should I choose in your opinion?
thanks for your input.

James

PS. if you are BU students, what do you think about APEX program?

UPitt of course. You'll like it. If you are from TN, and can get resident tuition, it's another story. However, I think Pitt is a great place to be for 4 yrs. They have really good student:faculty ratio. And the prof. takes good care of students over there.

Hi Pandaman,

Would you be able to elaborate on what is the apex program in BU??

thanks and good luck in picking a school thats right for you.

Mary

It stands for Applied Professional Experience. As far as I know, BU is the only school that provides this kind of program. Basically, during first 2 years in dental school, each dental student works with a practicing dentist, mostly shadowing and helping him/her out. Students also get paid during the program. People say this program is pretty helpful, because you get to learn various aspects of dentistry other than clinical or didactic skills. Also I heard some students get hired by the dentists they worked with during APEX program after they graduate.

Hey Panadaman,

Where did you find out that you get paid during your APEX rotation? Any idea on how much it is and does it vary depending on where you're placed or is there a standard amount? Thanks.

DMX,

I talked to two of the BU students while I was there for interview, and if my memory serves me right, I believe it was around $10 per hour. They said they work around 32 hours a week for 14 to 17 weeks. I don't know if the hourly wage is fixed or not, u might wanna check up on that with the school.

If you go to school in MA, you can challenge the hygiene license after second year. The hygiene salary is much better than what you get paid from the APEX program.
Hygiene salary in Boston should be at least $30/hr.

i also have trouble deciding between the two. which reputation is better: BU or pittsburgh?

There really isn't ANYTHING to decide unless you have both the acceptance letters in your hand....so let's talk about it after hopefully Dec 1st for you.

Risen from the dead! Kudos to you for using the search engine.

Tennessee has a dental school?!!?!?! You learn something new everyday...

Let's keep this ancient post going. We should track this guy down and see where he's at now! He's probably a big shot specialist!
