Wow this thread has gotten childish...seriously though anyone who says that all those who are reliant on welfare to survive are lazy bums needs to get a reality check...sure some folks abuse the system but there are lots of people who are disadvantaged and can't afford the extremely high price of health care...NO PHYSICIAN OR WANNA BE PHYSICIAN should ever ignore this need or this problem...your lucky its your duty to help the less fortunate among us...I can't believe someone actually said something along those lines so i will assume the OP is a troll and move on...but if you are serious you will get no where near a top 10 with that attitude...adcoms will see through you and see you are motivated by greed and nothing else...you can't ever tell me populations like those outside of Anamosa in southern colorado are in poverty because they are lazy...or those that are disabled and can't work and I could go on and on...wake up America may be the land of opportunity but that opportunity isn't available to everyone...

Gag....I think I just vomited a little in my mouth. You make me sick! When you are at your pretty little “top ten” interviews, make sure to tell them you are going into medicine for money, that you are homophobic, and that you prefer not to help the homeless….I am sure that will help you secure a spot in the program.

I'd rather be honest, which is something med schools like. I'm also sure that most of the top med schools who are run by conservatives would unofficially agree with my anti homosexual and anti homeless remarks.Lets get real, top schools like Harvard and Hopkins don't want homoeexuals in their schools, they'll never say it out loud though.

I'm going to be very honest in my interview and not fake like most of you.

I could careless about having fun in college and getting the whole college "experience".What am I supposed to learn something from some drunken ****** and stoners at a party.I don't feel that college is the time that you're supposed to have the most fun of your in,it's the time to work your ass off and prepare yourself for the real world, the technical aspect of it.

Why do you have to say work your ass off? I really hate that expression. Why can't you just say give it all you got or Study Hard or something. If you could literally work your ass off there would be no fat pre-meds, doctors, etc. and no one would need to go to the gym, everyone could just study for the mcats and lose weight. Ok that was dumb, but I'm just venting because people really abuse that expression.

are you kidding me? you need to grow up little kid. you just lost your last ounce of credibility. you should scratch your dreams of becoming a doctor and put that ability to forge private messages to use.
I think the best part is how he tried to fake a PM from you but still didn't put a space between sentences. That's fantastic.

ANYBODY who works hard in school has the oppurtunity to become successful and easily can afford health insurance for their family.Oppurtunity is available to EVERYBODY in this country who's a citizen. And you don't see that many immigrants on the street now do you.

aaahhh. You're a fellow Michigander.

Hahahaha! This makes me laugh Oh-SO much, because you'll be up to your neck in competition as a pre-med.

Here are some numbers to get you thinking: Roughly 4 out of 10 students at Mich start out pre-med. Then after classes, 1/2 drops out. After the MCAT, another half drops out. At the end, 1 out of 10 Mich graduate will be applying to med school with you, and about half will get in somewhere. If UM Med is your goal, then you'll have roughly a 1 in 10 chance of getting in during any particular application cycle. (To give you a concrete idea: ~6000-7000 entering students, ~600 med applications, ~60-80 get into UM. Roughly 10~15 students will also get into other top schools, like Duke, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, etc.) Good luck!
Be a little encouraging to the guy. He's obviously headed in the right direction. I knew from the day I started school that I would be getting into med school, and I was right. My advisor told me that she was certain after just a short time of knowing me that I would get in as well. I'm not a "top-gun" student, but some people just have the right level of determination.

See, I can bold things too! 😉 I thought you haven't been to college yet..? LOL, sorry but I think after this posting there will be an onslaught of "gunner-alert" replies. They will most likely tell you the same thing. One thing at a time, my friend.

You really can't knock the college experience until you've tried it. It is given that not ALL experiences will be "valuable", but these since college is more attainable than ever (still not enough in my opinion) a lot of people go.

A lot of people go, and a lot of people party, drop out, work their asses off, graduate. A lot of people also get into college having very definite plans for their life. As it turns out, college is one of the unique experiences that fosters major paradigm shifts. People change and grow. Going through these life experiences is a right of passage. It makes you more human and ultimately would make better doctor.

So MAYBE all these people who keep saying, "enjoy life and live it" have a point. Working hard is commendable and definitely rewarding, but everyone, especially good doctors needs balance. I hope you keep that in mind as you enter the university of your choice. I also hope that you stray away from the idea that schools can be generalized into a list of "top schools".

Good luck. :luck:

Oh god the good ole boys club is all but dead...Bob Jones U still has undergrad seats open so hurry up and get your app in...I would wager most of here with acceptances aren't "fake" at our interviews...I truly believe it is a physicians duty to care...does that mean sarcificing your practice hell no, but it does mean you do some pro bono work here and there...and as far as your gay comments its reprehensible...conservative or not there is no tolerance for that kind of bigotry in higher education...excluding of course the aforemention Bob Jones University...at which I sincerely believe you would fit in nicely with all the other whack job right wing conservatives...at least I know you won't survive in Iowa City

Do you know how many homosexuals have been accepted to Harvard med school in the past 15 years, ZERO!!!

It even says in the bible that homosexaulity is wrong.

I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall during one of your interviews. That is, if you get any.

Also, I hate to break this to you, but the vast majority of faculty interviewers are in academic medicine- meaning they are professors. And I'm sure you're aware that academics are, in general, of the left leaning or liberal persuasion. Maybe not the ones down south, but certainly Hopkins, Harvard, and Stanford. Good luck with that.

I can think of at least one openly gay person on this message board that got into Harvard last year

Conservatives control everything that is important in this country, including top med schools. That's just common sense.

No on is stopping you from being anti-gay, anti-poor (if there is such a thing), and in it all for the money. Go ahead.

And with that, any doubt of you being a troll has been removed forever.

To the OP:

I'm closing this thread due to childish attacks and other violations of the SDN TOS. I suggest that you and the others in this thread re-acquaint yourselves with it accordingly.

Furthermore, I suggest that swallow a big dose of humility. You're not even in college yet, let alone medical school and so you do not and cannot know how it is. You've got alot to learn, especially about what makes a good med school applicant. There has been some solid advice on this thread. I suggest you take it along with experiencing how others live. Go volunteer at a homeless shelter. You want to be a physician? Well, it ain't always about helping country club folks, dude.

Being good doesn't mean being an ass. Good luck in your endeavours.
