Hello! My name is guttergrades, and I have a terrible GPA (2.7cgpa, 2.5sgpa). No upward trend. I failed multiple classes and have 6 W’s. It’s bad. My grades were terrible, so I switched my bio major to an unrelated major. I now work a full-time office 8-5pm job.
2025 Accomplishments:
Received my state-tested nursing assistant license.
Have 100 hospital volunteering hours as of April 2025. 😀

There are no summer classes that are in-person and fit with my work schedule. So I have some options:

Summer 2025:
1) Start volunteering at a soup kitchen. Pros: Can pick up volunteering shifts whenever. Cons: None.

2) Pick up a second job. Pros: More clinical hours. Cons: It would be difficult to balance with a full-time job. My availability would be Saturdays only, which makes job hunting harder.

3) Volunteer for a hospice center. Pros: More clinical hours. Making a difference in people’s lives. Probably flexible with work. Cons: None.

Fall 2025:
1) The three summer options are also possible.

2) University Organic chemistry night class. Monday-Thursday. Pros: Orgo 1, Orgo 2, and biochem have to be taken in sequence and this would save time. I failed out Orgo 1 six years ago, so it’s not completely new. The professor is highly rated. Cons: Incredibly risky. Very time-consuming. I have to get an A.

3) Community college Microbiology Saturday class: Pros: It is on a Saturday. Cons: I have never taken microbiology.

4) Community College A&P 1 weekday class. Pros: I passed anatomy after taking it a second time. I have not taken physiology. The only stand-alone physiology class in my area is not a night class. I would feel most confident taking this class. Cons: Weekday.

Historically, I failed my classes because I prioritized work over school. I also did not care about my classes. I saw no endgame with school. Covid online classes exasperated these factors.

I believe the best course would be to continue hospital volunteering and pick up hospice + soup volunteering. This way, when I do take a class, I can see an endgame. I am still very tempted to take the orgo class, but I want to hear your thoughts. I am terrified that I will fail another class and I will dig myself a deeper grave. Thank you so much for reading this!!! Sorry for the long post.

One of your priorities is proving to yourself and others that you can excel and master science courses like you'll have to do during your first two years of medical school. Trust me when I say that the first two years are a totally different animal than a typical undergrad experience.

You could pick whichever course you want to take. If you can master the material and get an A while taking one course, you can consider your next step. If you manage to pass (or fail), but don't even get striking distance of an A after a course or two (despite putting in the correct effort), it may be time to pivot to something other than medical school.
