I know I've seen this thread before, but I cant find it anymore. Anyway, I need advice on which shoes to get. Ive heard that Dansko's clogs are great, but are they professional enough to wear around the office? Any other suggestions? Im tired of my feet killing me at the end of the day. Right now I just wear regular dress shoes from Dockers.

Birkenstocks!!! Birk makes a few brands of shoes/clogs. There are the original birks, and there are footprints which I recomend, and a few others. These are a little expensive, but they last forever, and for $55 you can have them completely rebuilt by Resole America. These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I have a pair of Birk cloggs and Footprints walking shoes. I had a lot of problems with my feet hurting, and the built in heel cups and arch supports are awesome. Both look nice also and can be worn with dress or casual clothes.

I suffer from this too. At least in the lab I wear good sneakers w/insoles, but once I hit the floors my feet BURN from all that standing. Walking is OK, but the standing in one place is horrible. I have tried the Dansko professional, and not all of them are all the're cracked up to be! The nubuck ones run a bit tighter, so they hurt my feet until I got them stretched w/ a show stretcher! Also, the nubuck aren't that nice for clinic, but OK for the floors/scrubs. If you go with something in shiny black or brown leather or patent, they're OK for clinic. Since soooo many docs and students where clogs, you won't look weird!

i had a surgery chief who actually wore ted hose and swore her feet hurt less because of it. go figure

Do a search...there have been tons of threads on both good shoes to wear AND on the benefits of compressions stockings. It is very not uncommon for surgery residents (probably other residents too, but I am speaking from my experience) to wear compression stockings...men and women. They really do help out tired legs tremendously and can make a BIG difference when on call (especially those last few hours at the end of a busy call). You can buy a pair of medium compression knee-high stockings at Walgreens for under $10.

I asked this when I started 3rd year too and if i remember correctly we got a HUGE thread started... soory, don't know where it is now. I ended up getting Clarks... and I LOVE them! They are like butter, i swear.. And they have such cute ones too. I got a pair of clogs b/c i like to slip them on and off but they have casuals, dress, clogs, boots, etc. When I first got them I made all the other students on my OB/Gyn rotation try them on and most of them went out and bought them within the next few days. Here's the link...

Oh, and I suggest Shoebuy.com as a place to buy all kinds of shoes. They seem to be cheaper than most online places and cheaper than the stores too, they have free shipping and free return shipping if you change your mind, and you can get a full refund or exchange very easily!

Compression stocking and Danksos

Not a big Dansko fan - they actually make my feet hurt. I love my Modellistas though (have the Tempur Pedic insoles). Hard to find but well worth the search 🙂

I also agree with compression stockings. They make my legs hurt a lot less.

I agree! I just bought 2 pairs of shoes from Shoebuy.com, and they're great! One is a pair of Sofft Mary Janes, and the others are Softspots mules. I could just walk in them 24 hrs a day! I haven't tried that yet, but 12 hrs is pretty close! 😀

I adore my danskos. I could care less how they look- they are presentable "enough" for me. All you philly kids head out to the factory store to get them for $60.

Compression stockings and merrell's. I abhor dansko's- I've nearly broken limbs due to unprovoked episodes of nearly falling while wearing dansko's.

the most comfy shoes i've found are franco sartos.
they look like they'd hurt really bad, but they're actually more comfortable than my danskos.

Wow, no concensus huh?
Do people wear the open-backed Danskos are closed back clogs?

Get Danskos if you feel like wearing high heels around. I looked like one of those Chinese women who bind their feet when I was in the store trying them on, and I almost turned my ankle walking around the store. So, I went to REI, got some Merrell clogs for $70, and blew through 12 weeks of surgery without any pain in my feet, except for the end of the 36 hour trauma call shift... They are good enough for dress and surgery so I don't have to change them EVER.

Danskos either fit a select group of feet, or people say they're great since they forked out $120 for them, and they should be great at that price. They sure didn't work for me. I've seen some people with Crocks and they like them. Some people like their Berks. Find what works for you, the most expensive are not always the best.

🙂

i love wearing danskos when it's a clinic day, but they give me shin splints when i'm running around on call. i have birkenstock mary janes that are wonderful, but i also have a pair of $8 payless mary-janes that look like dress shoes, but have a sneaker-like bottom. good luck!

merrell's shoes!! the kind i own have a fuzzy interior just like slippers. most of them are athletic looking but they do look ok with long pants for clinic days. they're the only shoes that do not make my feet hurt, especially after a 24h call. i've had them for a year and they're still going, even better than my dansko's.

here's a link to merrell's at shoebuy

I don't wear leather and it is always a problem when I am looking to buy some shoes to where, particularly with dress clothes. Have any of you come across any non-leather comfy shoes.

I used to work in the OR and had rubber clogs which were great but that doesn't work unless you are in scrubs. I found some felt danskos in black that will work but are they professional enough? Any opinions? 😕

Softwalks!!!! They are so comfortable, and come in several dress/clog styles. They are a bit expensive - in the $90's, but they are really comfortable. I've survived 18 hours in the wards/clinic/wards again in them, my butt & thighs hurt from running the stairs, but my feet didn't hurt!

I wear Danskos in the OR and ER and on call, but I wear nicer dress shoes to clinic. I have to admit, I have tipped over a couple of times in the Danskos. But they're so supportive! I have flat feet and it makes all the difference.

I've heard that the clogs by "crocs" are amazing. I see tons of nurses wearing them and they swear by them. Apparantly they mold to your feet...are only $30. they come in tons of different styles and colors. i am going to invest in a pair for surgery. I believe you get find them at most department stores and they have a website. right now i wear merrell clogs and they are very comfortable. they are black so i wear them in the hospital and clinic.

merrell mocs are supportive, comfy, and cheaper than danskos. And I think they fit your foot a lot better.

I ended up going with Dankso's professional in black. I'm not going to go as far as saying that they are like walking on air or anything. But my feet don't hurt by the end of they day. Sure they still get tired, but NO pain.

As for how they look, they look fine with scrubs, and decent with dress slacks. I actually don't wear anything else. No one has said anything about them not being professional enough, or looking good. The only comment I got was from a internest who always dresses very very nice, and he said "I love Dansko's, thier real comfortable". Of course, he wasn't wearing them when he said it.

There are many nurses at one hospital that wear Z-Coils.
They are not the most attractive...however, all that wear these shoes, swear they no longer have aching feet.
I have never tried them (my feet don't ache and they are $$$).
