Yo, I'm in trouble here. I woke up this morning to find my neck all screwed up. Not only does my neck hurt like crazy, but I can't move it. Right now, it's tilted a little bit to the left and bent forward a little... and it's just stuck...

The problem is that I have an interview at davis tomorrow, and my flight is only a few hours away... Do you think it's worth it to go to the Davis interview in my condition?

God... can't believe this is happening to me... 🙁

This happened to me once, exactly like your describe it (except for interview). I went to the doctor, he prescribed something, and I was pretty much fine the next day. Is seeing a doctor possibility? Maybe you can take a later flight. Hope you feel better and everything works out!

I had the same thing happen to me once too. I had a flu at the time as well but I'm not sure whether the conditions were related. Anyway, I remember it took about 2-3 days before it felt significantly better. I later found out the treatment is a muscle relaxant shot which supposedly makes it go away faster.

I think it can be because of either

Anxiety

or you slept wrong.

Go buy a box of thermacares, it will help and you can use them on your flight. I don't have any experience with muscle relaxers, but I would take some advil or other pain medication. You should feel fine, just take the max dosage every 4 to 6 hours with the heat, should make it better. I wouldn't back out of an interview so late because they might not reschedule you and if they did, it might hamper you application, plus you loose money on your flight etc.

I hope you don't have meningitis!! Can you touch your neck to your chest??

Thanks, guys. I just changed my flight from tonight to tomorrow morning... Hopefully, my neck will get better by then. If not... Gosh... I can't imagine going on a tour like this...

ATPase: Meningitis?? What does that feel like?

kwanny, I was really just kidding, but meningitis can cause you to have a stiff neck. I wouldn't worry about it unless you start running a fever.

kwanny,

Chances are it isn't meningitis, but do you have the vaccine?

Other symtoms include vomitting, drowsiness, light sensitivity, joint aches, fever, headache.
Yeah I know pretty non specific. Can you think of why your neck hurts though? Did you have a tough workout yesterday or something?

If you see petechiae any where over your body (splotchly rash) then you should definitely go to the ER.

It's probably just a stiff neck though, so this information is probably useless (hopefully)

maybe you need to cut down on SDN

I had THE EXACT SAME thing too! I woke up and heard a loud "crack!" the day after I'd flown on a plane 5 hours and I was in Hawaii! I was incredibly pissed off to be in such a condition on my vacation! I went to the chiropractor right away and he adjusted it for me so I could move again, but told me to ice it a few times a day and take advil. I'm sure it had to do with sleeping weird on the plane.
Can you get to a chiorpractor? That really did the trick for me. Good luck!

Chiropractor? do they work? are they real?

I got them when I was a kid a lot... my mom used to say I had a "cold in my neck"... usually they followed after I had been sick or had a bad bout of allergies. Took about 2-3 days before they went away. But, it was never serious. Sometimes I got a headache from trying to make my head turn when the neck didn't want to move 🙄

If you have a health clinic, you could probably see if you can get some muscle relaxers for the neck.

Well I had to take a magic cloud to get to his office, and his staff were all elves, but other than that, yeah, he was real, and yeah, it worked!

sounds more like an acute torticollis, basically just a muscle cramp that is really annoying but should go away with time. i wouldn't use ice though, you want to relax the muscle so heat would be better along with some gentle stretching exercises. GO TO A PT.

Um... these kids must be immortal, huh? And how is this supposed to my neck any better again?

yeah, the medicine is kicking in right now, and I feel minimal amount of pain... but my neck's still crooked though... 😡

Just ask your interviewers to tilt their heads when talking to you LOL.

Wow... I never had faith in the art of acupuncture... till now... Damn, it's pretty amazing how I could straighten my neck just 20 min after having some pins stuck on my neck.

Anyone else had some experience with acupuncture? I'd highly recommend it. 😉

Just think of it as an early review for clinical correlations of Head and Neck Anatomy next year.....you will already know what Torticollis is...apparently one of your Sternocleidomastoid Muscles is not happy! Hope you feel better soon!

I'd ask your interviewers if they have syringes with botox and/or hydrocortisone injections.
