I just got the call and have until tomorrow to decide. Need some quick information as everyone at UNC has left for the day.

1. What is OOS tuition plus expected living expenses? I can find tuition online but not the expected living expenses.

2. Can I reclassify to instate tuition after the first year provided I really plan on living within the state of NC after graduation?

3. If I switch now, will I be eligible for financial aid funding?

4. Is housing readily available near campus, approx. 3 bedroom home? Any ideas on rent?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi! I'm guessing by got the call you mean that you got in off the waitlist, right? Congrats!! I will also be attending UNC as an OOSer next year! Here is the financial aid info that they gave us (the numbers are from last year, but are probably pretty similar to what they will be next year)
tuition/fee=31,326
book=1000
living expense=13,920
travel=1306
misc=13,096
total=60,648

plus there is a summer session with 14,049 tuition additional.

-from what I heard while I was at my interview it is pretty easy to get instate residency. you just need to get a new drivers lincense and license plates as soon as you get there. I'm sure there are other things that need to be done throughout the year as well-but i think its fairly simple.

-i don't know much about housing in the area, but from what I've heard real estate is expensive in Chapel Hill itself, but affordable if you go further away-durham,rtp, ect. There are tons of rental options in the area! My husband and I went down a few weeks ago and looked at like 13 rental options and they were all very nice-had a hard time making a decision because we liked them all!

Hope this helps and good luck with your decision!

I'm from NC and can tell you from experience that it's not as easy as it sounds. Unless you have lived in NC at least one year prior to the first day of class, you are going to be stuck with OOS tuition, even if you have bought a house and changed all your info to NC. After the first year, you can apply for in state tuition. Hope that helps. Congrats on getting in!

The cost of living in Chapel Hill is varied - depending on where you live, how old it is, its amenities, etc. You can find CHEAP apts to more expensive ones. Some property mgmt companies in the area are Fisher-Fisher, Louise Beck, Mill House, Redstone, and Red Door. I would also recommend chapelhillrent.com for good listings. A 3bd HOUSE would run from $750/mo to $3000/mo - again, depending on amenities.

In terms of financial aid, you need to add UNC to your FAFSA asap. But we are not notified until July by UNC as to our awarded $$ amounts...so you won't be much behind.

As for the In-state qualifications, it's a bit complicated. I wouldn't bank on getting IS tution - but if it happens, it'll be a plus. Chapel Hill is a wonderful town, with a great atmosphere. Best of luck in your decision.

2nd. I didn't get in-state tuition for undergrad until after I'd had an NC address for almost 2 years.

I think the living estimates they give you are a little high -- you can find plenty of decent rentals/apartments in the area for about $500 a room if you share with 1-2 others (~$6000 a year). Even nicer ones shouldn't be more than $600-700 per room unless you must have a 1-bedroom. If you want to be within walking distance to campus, expect to pay $500-600 for a room in a shared house. Add utilities, food, gas, etc., which would be about the same anywhere. If you want to buy, condos that I would consider are generally $150-250k, with older, not-as-convenient units at one end and nicer townhouses at the other.
