hey
Got my first rejection letter today from DMU. 🙁 I've only applied to three schools (DMU, KCOM, NSU) and since this rejection I am thinking about my chances. what are my chances?? GPA science:3.01, GPA cum: 3.44, MCAT 23. I also have a D.O. LOR and plenty of EC's. I'm trying to figure out why I was rejected.
should I add more schools?? any advice at this point would be appreciated

I would have definitely applied to more schools. I don't think you are a bad candidate, but there are just so many applicants. It really is hard to predict whether one gets in to medical school or not.

I would add more schools since you still have some time before the secondaries are due. Also you could call DMU to ask what was the factor.

definitely add more schools!! its not too late and you can get started on some secondaries before you get them (you can find the prompts around here). was this pre or post interview? keep the faith! 🙂

Since you're at the lower end of the stats, you really need to apply to more schools to increase your chances. Its not too late, but do it soon.

any tips on which schools to apply to. I am a Florida resident so I was thinking of applying to LECOM-Bradenton.

I would concur with everyone else saying to definately apply to more schools--apply to the private schools. I would definately add all of the new schools LECOM-Bradenton, PCOM-Atlanta, and TU-Nevada as I would predict that these are the schools that will accept the candidates with the lowest stats.

Also, it is hard to tell what the reason is that you were rejected--but keep in mind that this is no longer "early" in the application process when your chances are best. Your stats are a bit on the low side acrossed the board, so that probably is why you were rejected.

Good luck in this process and remember that it only takes one acceptance to be a doctor.

I just want to say thanks. I am applying to more schools. Lets see how it goes.

It's great that you are applying to more schools.

Just some thoughts...
Your MCAT is on the lower end, so this may have been one of the reasons. I had a friend with your numbers, and he also got rejected. FYI, they might ask you to explain why at your interviews.

Your personal statement may have been a factor. Definitely call and find out so you can improve upon that area.

Look at the stats for students accepted. Definitely apply to ones that have lower MCAT stats compared to the others.

Don't loose heart yet!

You should retake the MCAT or begin to think of other things that you can do with your life.
If patient care is something that you really feel the need to be involved in, consider nursing. The pay may not be as much as an MD, but if you factor in the years of med school and residency, you will make more money in your twenties and early thirties as a nurse. You will also have more time to spend with the patients and less time to spend with administrative duties.
Your science credits also make you very employable as a Jr. High School or High School science teacher. I have been teaching in Jr. High for the past three years and I am really enjoying it. Next year I plan on going back to school to get my med school pre-reqs. I know that there is at least a 40% chance of not getting accepted. I just figure that I have enoyed my life so far, and I would be happy with a career in nursing or education too, (but man, I sure want to get into med school.)

I think you mean DO, since he applied to DO schools and this is the DO forum.

OP:
BTW, you should always have a backup plan, but don't give up as easily as Dr.Tex is suggesting. There are many other options (like post-bacc programs, MCAT prep courses ect.) that can be exhausted before you give up your dream to become a nurse. I am a Paramedic now, and although I got into med school, if I had not, I would have kept trying before I just gave up to teach science or EMS, or just keep being a tech.

Hey nonameremains... I hate to admit it but I also got a 23 on the MCAT 🙁 . But I applied really early and actually got into the 3 schools that interviewed me 😀 . I applied to the following DO schools: NSU, UMDNJ, CCOM, MSUCOM, UNECOM, and NYCOM. No response after secondary from NSU, UMDNJ or NYCOM (never even sent me a secondary)... but the other three interviewed and gave me the shot. PS- my GPA cum is lower than yours.
What I wanted to say I guess is that even if you didn't get a spot this year, applying early next year might be all you need to do. In the meantime I would not give up my dream, but maybe try to work in healthcare for a year so you can have some more insight into the field for your statement and interviews next round.
I feel very blessed and lucky :luck:
DO NOT GIVE UP! If this is your dream... it is achievable.

finally got in touch with DMU...turns out they did not have my most recent MCAT score (23). so, that was the problem. I called AACOMAS and they'll release my scores this week, hopefully. and DMU promised re-review my file.

Education was always my back-up plan but I really want to be a doctor! no matter what, i'm not giving up!
