Hello

i am a medical graduate(MBBS) from india.i have completed my mbbs with internship one year ago.

i have strong desire to go for usmle now
.but lately i heard a buzz that no of AMG are going to outnumber total residency seats in usmle and hence from 2015 usmle is gonna be very difficult for FMGs.

I hv not appeared for any usmle steps till now niether hv done any clerkship or observership.

DOUBTS

1.Is the above buzz is true?and if yes then whether is it still a wise idea to start for usmle nw.?

2.Since I do not hv any exposure of clerkship and LOR. Do I will hv less preference at the time of matching and interview?

3.is it possible/necessary to do any research/observership now?
4.what is the best possible option for me in current situation?

If you are set on coming to the United States for residency, you will need to the USMLE for sure. No, the chances are stacked against you for sure, but if you are hard working AND set on coming to the US, it may be possible to match.

You can try to participate in research for a year or two (kill 2 birds with one stone- Research + Clinical Exposure + LORs) and then try to apply for the match. This would probably be your best option- by that I mean the route that is most likely to allow you to match.

Problems with this route:
- Takes a long time (1-2 yrs)
- Still far from being guaranteed
- Unlikely to get paid for your time in the US doing research

OR the other option is to just write the USMLEs (do as well as you can), try to schedule rotations in the US (but that will be difficult as well) and then try to match again.

The third option is to apply for a M.S. or PhD at some University and try to get research in epidemiology or surgical outcomes, or basic sciences at a medical school at an MD's lab, and then try to match after that. This way, you will get a stipend ($ to support yourself) and then get the LOR+ Clinical experience that you will need.

There are lots of Masters/ PhD in research available. Take time to do some research yourself and look.

Next time, do not start many threads regarding the same topic.
