i respond only if the invitation tells me (i.e. to email possible dates, to call the office to set up a date) or to reschedule a date that i can't make. otherwise, i don't say or do anything. i do, however, write thank you notes to my interviewers after the fact. but that's just me. others may tell you differently. try not to overthink this process too much, or it'll drive you crazy (or crazier, as i've learned). i know it's easier said than done, though...

once you've got the invite, just say Thank you for the interview invitation and then request a date if applicable. that's if they even ask you to respond. if they don't, i wouldn't do it. the person that's gonna read it most likely will not give a hoot bout who u are and your gratitude.

I agree.

Yeah...respond with a thank you only if you are asked to respond to the e-mail to confirm or set up a date via e-mial. After interview, I would send out personalized thank you e-mails to my interviewers. So, if you plan to send e-mails be sure to get an e-mail or business card...it helps 🙂

You are not a person in the school's mind until you are interviewed. Until then, you are afloat in a sea of medical school applicants struggling to get that interview so they can show off their human-side rather than the numbers. I'd hold off showering them with any kind of gratitude or thankfulness until you have had the chance to interview THEM and to tour the school. Part of the interview process is for you to get to know the students, faculty, and facilities better as well as for them to get to know you. Wait until you meet them to make any overt statements about the school as you may change your mind!
