I am still finishing up my personal statement. I feel that the more I write, the more I lose confidence in writing it. I am getting so nervous 🙁. Can someone send me their winning statements so that I can read and learn from them?
Thanks,

Ka

We discourage members from soliciting other members' personal statements, though in the past some members have offered to edit/give suggestions to people who are struggling. Maybe someone would be willing to look over what you have (via e-mail, PM), and provide some feedback?

You also need to remember that there really is no one "winning statement." The statement is about you and the particular program you're applying for - so referencing other people's statements aren't necessarily going to be good for you. There are some sample statements available in various places online if you look, but they should be guidelines, not necessarily templates for you to cut and paste from.

I would recommend asking people you know (professors, etc.) to read it and give you feedback. I wrote what I thought was a horrible first draft, and after 2 professors, my aunt, a fellow SDN member, and boyfriend critiqued it several times over, I ended up with something that I am quite proud of. 🙂

I know what you mean. I've read mine over so many times, I feel like I'm going cross-eyed. My advice is to take a break from it (a day or two or three) so you can come back to it with fresh eyes. I also find that I have more patience to read it over and edit it carefully then.

You're so lucky to have so many people critique your essay! I'm glad you finally got a result you're happy with.

I'm kind of stuck with who to ask. I'm the only fluent English speaker in my family, so the fam is out. I have a professor and mentor who I could ask but since I've already bombarded them with recommendation requests, I feel terrible asking them for the extra favor, as I know they are very busy. I had a few good friends look it over and they've offered some helpful advice but I still feel unsure since they are coming from a different background. As a result, if anyone here at SDN can offer some time/advice, it would be much appreciated! 😀

I believe hamsterpants was offering to trade personal statements for mutual critique and evaluation - check with her.

Hi everyone,

I'd also be interested in exchanging personal statements (or, if anyone who's already gotten in feels like reading over one too, that'd be cool!). Please PM me if you're interested.

Hi everyone,

I also would like to exchange personal statements with anyone interested or anyone who just wants to give feedback!🙂 Just pm me.

Same boat! 🙂 I have a couple of personal statements ready to be reviewed and would be interested in trading with others as well. PM me if you're interested! TIA

My statements are done and submitted, but I don't mind reviewing other people's. Hamsterpants can give me a reference. 😀

She rocks, it is true. My statement really benefitted from her suggestions.

I would exchange with you but I am currently dealing with 6 apps & associated life stuff and don't have the time or the energy. also, I'm pretty happy with my current statement and don't want to go overboard with changing it at this point.
