HELP!!! Philly / PCOM housing

I need HELP!!!! I need to find a place near PCOM but I have no idea where to start looking. I checked out AptforRent but I don't know what is near PCOM, etc. Also, for the price ranges, I have no idea what I'm getting. Please help.

Hey,

Your best bet for finding an apartment around PCOM is to come down during the day and go to student affairs to look at the apartment book. You can find some nice places at good prices. If you can't get down here during the week to look at the book, you should definitely check out the apartment complexes off of City Ave and Conshohoken (sp??) Ave or head over to Manayunk and Roxborough. Some of the apartment complexes right near campus are Presidental City (which I don't recommend), Lincoln Green (which is expensive but good (I live there)--$900/month), Imperial Towers (a friend of mine lives there and loves it), Duffield House, Greenbriar, etc... Most student either live right off campus in the City Ave/Conshohocken Ave area or they live in the Manayunk/Roxborough area.

Thanks for responding. Is the City Ave/Conshohocken Ave area close to campus? I'm most likely not going to have a car, so I would love to find a place within walking distance. Also, I hear the area around PCOM is horrible (I'm from SoCal so I have no idea what's true and what's a rumor 🙄 ). Also, are you paying $900/mo for a one bedroom or sharing with other people? Any pointers would be great.

I might as well post this here...

I'm a 4th year NSUCOM DO student, and I'm doing an elective up in Philly at Albert Einstein Medical Center in August... I need a place to stay! If anyone has an extra bedroom that they would be willing to sublet for a month, I would be willing to pay $$$. I won't be there much, only to sleep. My days off I will drive down to DC since that's where I'm from. Thanks.

DO NOT RENT AT PRESIDENTIAL CITY!!!
Alot of PCOMers (including me) rented there in their first year. Nothing but problems.

Henry on the Park in roxborough was a great place, but its starting to get a bit expensive.

Renting in Roxborough/Manayunk is cheaper and safer than a complex by the school. Also you'll be close to the main st. Manayunk nightlife.

My wife and I bought a place in Roxborough/Manayunk and will stay in it through residency. Probably your best deal if you can swing it.

From the rumors I've heard, living at Presidential means that you'll have many little 'roommates' running around your apartment at night...

Anyways, the area around PCOM isn't horrible...it's actually one of the nicer areas of Philly. Of course, it's still the city so you have to keep your wits about you (i.e. I wouldn't run down the street at 3am wearing a rolex screaming "I have lots of money on my person"). If you want to live close to school, try Green Briar, Lincoln Green, or Presidential...these are all large apartment complexes within blocks of PCOM. Otherwise, there are a ton of row houses around the area...best bet for these would be to go to the Student Affairs office and check out the housing book...

Oh, and Water, get a car. It will make life at PCOM a lot easier.

docmanphilly- you're the second person who has told me about the rat problem at Presidential City. I think I'll pass on that complex.

David511- I really don't think I can afford to buy a car with my loans and all...but do you think if I live near the campus and rely on public transportation, would it still be very difficult? I don't have a problem walking to and from campus, but my only concern would be grocery shopping, etc. I was hoping a taxi or bus would take care of that since I heard everybody on the east coast relies on pub trans...is that true or just a west coast idea?

Hey guys, like I posted before, I'm doing a month rotation at Albert Einstein Medical Center. I'm looking to sublet (if anyone has an open spot, I'd be more than happy to rent it out for a month). Anyways, I'm looking for a place to stay for a month and am looking online... any places or areas you guys could recommend that would be in a decent area and easy driving distance to the 'stein? Thanks.

Quinn, give Student Affairs a ring (215-871-6870)...they may be able to hook you up with a place.

Water, from my experience public transportation in Philly is not as friendly as in the other major east coast cities. Plus, PCOM is right on the edge of Philly (i.e. its pretty much the 'burbs) thus the area is organized around the idea that everyone has cars (sorta like LA). You can get around on the bus, but it's a time-consuming process. If you're set on not having a car, I'd look for housing in one of the larger apartment complexes (Presidential) since they tend to have a shuttle that goes to the local shopping areas for their elderly residents. Also, you may want to look into getting an alternate loan (one that the school doesn't need to approve) so you can set yourself up with a vehicle...most of the people I know in my class that didn't have a car when school started picked one up by the end of the year.

As David already said, you should definitely take out an alternate loan and get a car. It is going to be hard otherwise to get around Philly and I would not recommend Philly's public transportation.

As for living at Lincoln Green, I do pay alittle less than $900 a month for a one bedroom apartment for myself. This is pretty expensive but I took out additional private loans beyond the $38,500 and I was fine.

You should definitely come to PCOM at some point soon to check out the housing book in student affairs. This will probably be really helpful. In addition, if you go to apartments.com and do a search for the City Ave area you might find something close to PCOM. Also, on the PCOM website (http://www.pcom.edu/asp/housing.asp#here) you can check out some of the local apartments. Which reminds me, PCOM is located off of City Ave. between Monument and Conshohocken, so Conshohocken needless to say is not far from campus. 🙂

CALL PCOM STUDENT AFFAIRS THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP YOU OUT WITH SOMETHING!! 🙂 ALSO, CALL THE HOSPITAL THEY MIGHT HAVE HOUSING THAT THEY COULD OFFER YOU? Some of the hospitals here don't offer housing but if the student is coming from far away they can help them out.

Do not go to Presidential City!
They are not rats, they are mice and yes I have seen them in my apartment. The only reason I can think of to live here is the location.
I can think of a few reasons why not to live here:
-mice
-roaches
-Temple Students(they are worse than the mice)
-you don't control your own gas heat (some cold nights, they don't turn the gas on; some hot days, they forget to turn the heat off)
-fire alarms (2am the night of your first Cardiology exam)
-broken gym equipment
-$30 fee for supposedly free pool membership
-most awful laundry room I have ever seen
-no parking spaces after 8pm
-neighbors leave trash in hallway
-rental agents are very helpful until you sign the lease, then they won't give you the time of day
-broken elevators on a daily basis
-people steal your cable TV from the unlocked cable boxes in the stairwells
-extremely small kitchen

Well, that's enough for now.
I am moving in exactly 13 days and I just can't wait.

I will be living at Lincoln green while I do 6 months of rotations in Philly. Any problems with that place (parking, management, etc). I am also looking for a good IM rotation. Any suggestions?
