Hey all,

IMG here. Many of you probably haven't heard of any scores this low, so let me just give you some background.
I scraped my way past basic sciences and have forgotten most of it. Have not started studying for the step 1 so I just wanted to gauge where I was. I got 149 on nbme 5.

The question is where should I start? Kaplan lecture notes? Firecracker? or just go straight to FA,

Thank in advance

FA. Do 1 pass and take another nbme to see where you stand. Then get back to us.

I think you should do Kaplan lecture notes and annotate into First Aid whatever is relevant. But a 149 indicates serious gaps in your learning. You won't understand First Aid if you don't have at least a decent grasp of the material and blind memorization doesn't work on the Step. My suggestion is therefore to combine Kaplan and First Aid. Good luck.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice. It's not that I don't want to do kaplan or anything but I should have made myself clearer. The only sections I managed to get through were behavioral science and biochem, with the latter being one of the more concept-oriented topics on the step 1. I thought I had a decent grasp of the biochem section, so is it just a case of refreshing my memory or do I have to go to back to the very basics? (I have access to more detailed texts for all topics on the step 1 which I can refer to if I don't understand something)

You'll only know for sure once you've done a proper pass of FA and taken an NBME.

Totally agree. Do Kaplan lectures, annotate. Don't pay attention to how low the score is. Point is to master each section, make connections to other sections. Then as you do Kaplan also do their qbank - its overly detailed, however, it will give you good base. After all that (reading kaplan, filling out first aid). Do world - that is all high-yield. With that go through first aid and add notes to it from world as well. Then your first aid is truly ready to be read. At the end of the day step 1 is a combo of depth and broadness of your knowledge. Just reading first aid is meaningless without good notes and background on every point. First aid is a GUIDE not a teacher - it helps you in directing your efforts.
