I had a question for you guys and I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could help me with this.
I am starting med school in fall of 2004 and I just recently made the decision to have laser surgery for my eyes. However, there are many problems. For one thing, my eyes are extremely weak. Both my left and right eye are about -10 (to be exact I believe one is -9.25 and the other is -9.5). Additionally, I also have astigmatism, I believe about 2.5 in one eye and 3.5 for the other. I have been wearing contacts for a long time and since I started developing GPC (giant papillary conjuctivitis) which causes extreme irritation and itching of my eyes, I have much trouble with my contacts. About a 1.5 ago I consulted an ophtalmologist in regards to lasik surgery. But unfortunately when they ran a test to determine if the thickness of my cornea was suitable for this kind of surgery, the doctor noted that it was about 50 or so nm below the required thickness and automatically lasik was excluded. I can't see good with my contacts since due to my chronic grade 3-4 GPC and the protein builtup on my contacts and of course, I can't see well with my glasses at all either. It is driving me crazy and I really need to take care of this before going to med school and having to deal with real patients with my eye condition. I would greatly appreciate if you guys with your experience and expertise could enlighten me in regards to what other procedures are out there for me. I know there is another procedure named LASEK. My question is,
1) is lasek an option in my situation?
2) how does the ophtalmologist deal with my astigmatism?
3) Is it too risky for my situation?
4) Is there any new procedure directed for patients in my situation?
I apologize if this is too long. I would greatly appreciate your help as at this time I am absolutely clueless where to start. I just wanted to get some advice and opinion before searching for an ophtalmologist. Thank you so much!!
