Hey everyone,

I would greatly appreciate your opinion on whether the following would count as BCPM (gpa purposes)?

1) BioE: Bioengineering Problems and Experimental Investigation
(research)
2) Ortho: Undergraduate Research
(research)
3) Physics😛hysics of the Cell Phone
4) Math: Quantitative Reasoning - Practical Math
5) Surg: Principles and Practice of International Medical Humanitarianism in Surgery

Would AMCAS be asking for syllabi for these? Would appreciate your feedback!

If the courses are classified under a BCPM department, it will most likely be given BCPM credit. Also, as far as research goes, if you take the research credit hours under, say, the Biology department, it counts as BCPM credit hours.

1. Yeah probably
2. Depends on what the department classification is. Does your school really have something like ORTHO101 or is it under the bio department? Just because it's medically related doesn't mean it's BCPM
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. The verification process might not classify this as a BCPM because it very clearly is about "medical humanitarianism" and nothing to do with BCPM. But depending on the department it's listed under, it might slide through.

See sector9's link here for BCPM classification.

Thanks for your replies guys.
1) I have looked at that AMCAS link, but was just curious about research credit, since that is not technically a structured course.
2) Also not sure about the courses that are technically in BCPM departments but are fuzzy by content.
3) Lastly, under which of the BCPM would a class from the "Surgery" department of a med school be classified on AMCAS?

I feel like these are grey areas and would appreciate your opinions of how AMCAS/MD schools would view these classes I listed. Thanks again for those who have already replied.

My best guess would be:
1. Engineering (Non-BCPM)
2. Health Sciences (Non-BCPM)
3. Physics (BCPM)
4. Math (BCPM)
5. Health Sciences (or perhaps "Other") (Non-BCPM)

AMCAS does not ask for syllabi, although you could potentially point to the syllabus when you're trying to argue for a course classification to be changed after verification if you want to appeal/change their decision

I suggest reading the guidelines in AMCAS and going with your gut. Others might argue otherwise, but everyone's interpretations can be different, and the worst that can happen is AMCAS changes it (automatically) on the reviewed application.
