Hello all! I have been going back and forth between my top 4 programs for a solid month, and I still cannot decide. I would appreciate any help you can offer!

RUSH, Thomas Jefferson, UC Davis, UCLA

FYI, I am interested in Neuro-Onc, Neuro-ID, and Movement most of all, although this could change. I would be willing to do an away rotation if my program is weak in one of these area(s). I am more interested in good clinical training than research, and having approachable faculty is a big priority!

Based purely on overall reputation would rank UCLA > Rush > UCD > TJ. Not sure if Goetz is still at Rush, but if he is they are probably the best for movement. To my knowledge, none of those places are big neuro-onc centers. Neuro-ID is a bit of a wild card, but I would guess UCLA is best for that.

I have heard that UCLA used to really destroy their residents and had a bad burnout rate. Any idea if that is still true?

Generally speaking, the more patients you see, the better neurologist you will become. The days of yelling, screaming attendings are mostly over. I've never been to UCLA, but have met a few who trained there and they are top notch. Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I'm glad I had to work very hard during my residency because now I feel very well trained.

I did a stroke sub-I at UCLA and I was really impressed by the residents. The attendings I worked with seemed very real and down to earth. The stroke service could get pretty busy but not unmanageable. The general neuro/consult service seemed a lot busier than we were. The conferences were well attended and substantive. Cafeteria food was great and the people were generally very nice.
I don't know anything about the other 3 programs. Good luck with your decision!
