hi i need some help. this is my last quarter before i graduate and I just saw that UCLA (my #1 choice) requires statistics.

I already have a busy load and I really do not want to take STATs, but I will if i have to.

Will it hurt my application if i dont have stats? Do you guys recommend i take it now, or just take it the summer before matriculation if i happen to be lucky enough to get accepted there?

:luck:

I m kinda on the same boat. I m taking Stats right now just because of UCLA. Did u have an interview at UCLA yet? During interview, they asked me to fill out a form and list all the classes I plan to take up to Spring this year. Plus, if you take it in the summer, will you have your grade ready by the end of July since you need to send out your transcript by then? I think you should call the office and ask them about it. Good luck

actually, i am applying in june, so i have not interviewed. i called the other day and they did say its fine as long as you finish it before you matriculate.

so you should find a class that ends before UCLA begins.

since you went through the app process, do you think not having stats on my app will hurt me when ucla reviews my app?

I'm in the same position..I'm just going to take it at a local community college during their first summer session

It won't hurt your application. I hadn't fulfilled all of the requirements when I applied. They just want you to complete everything before you matriculate. 🙂

weird, i called a long time ago and was told, a year of calculus will be okay as long as it covered some of stats...i dunno now?

You should take it a community college, but make sure they're on a semester system. You need a full year of math (calc or stats) -- 2 semesters or 3 quarters.

I took a year of Calculus 1 and 2 already. When I went to the interview, I asked the staff there and was told that I would need stats by the time I was matriculated to the school. I did say they needed a separate course of stats. You should call them and ask again.

No, it wont hurt your application at all. As long as you take it before you start med school, you'll be fine. feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Good luck

I think they said, "if u take 2 quarter units of calc...then u need stats to make it a full year" b/c at UCLA 3 quarters=1 year. 2 semesters of calc. is okay....from what i've been told. but I'll call tomorrow.

so you took 2 quarters of Cal and 1 quarter of Stats? if that's the case, you are fine.

so for everyone the UCLA SOM requires: One year of college mathematics to include the study of introductory calculus and statistics...

my one year of math was two calc classes and the second semester included a bit of stats so i dunno? i was told i'm okay.

that would realllllllllllly suck if i need to take stats b/c i have summer plans already mapped out. crap.

no i took 2 semesters of calc. What I was told is that if u go to a school where there are only quarters then u need stats...b/c at a school of quarters 2 math classes wont suffice. therefore u take stats to fill the one year requirement. i had semester system...so 2 semesters of calc is okay.

You definitely need to call them up tomorrow. What are the names of the 2 math classes you took? If they are just Calculus 1 and 2 as shown on your transcript, I dont think it would be ok. But that' s just my opinion. What do I know?
I know it sucks. sorry trudat.

in the event that this stats class cant be satisfied....how likely is it to be allowed excused from the requirement??

I took 2 semesters of Calculus 1 and 2 so it made up a full year of Calculus. Didnt they give you a sheet to sign about completing all the requirements before matriculation? They listed pretty details what they wanted on that sheet. That's when I realized I needed Stats after trying to convince the staff that my calculus was pretty andvanced and not even introductory. But it didnt work. They insisted I had to take Stats.

Can you try to take it somewhere in the summer? Oh, some community colleges even have ONLINE stats. All we need is to pass this class so who cares if it's online or not, right? I would just take it. Do you live in Socal? I can give you the name of the community college if you need.

no i didnt get the sheet....my interviewer told me i didnt need it and that i was okay. a few weeks later i called the office and was told the same thing. weird. now i'm super worried. eek, well i havent even been accepted/waitlisted/rejected....all this worrying could be for nothing. i might just be another potential 2008 reapplicant.

yah whats the name?

no what are the dates for the class and alsoooooooooo can i sign up over the internet?
