I have been delaying my decision now for at least a month on my eventual choice to Medical School. I have been accepted to several schools, but based on the comfort level i felt at both schools and their proximity to home, I have narrowed the choices to Temple and UMNDJ-SOM.

I have been leaning toward osteopathic for several years because of their theory in medicine and my belief that it is the future of medicine. However, I plan to do work abroad in the future. In one of my interview i expressed this. A faculty member of the school (he was a DO) told me that maybe i should look into MD schools more because DO's are not as accepted abroad as MD's. Pretty much the same problem in the US, but to the point that they might not be able to practice. Is this true, are other countries, especially 3rd world countries unwilling to allow a DO to practice? If so, it may have a huge impact on my decision. Thanks for your help in advance.

Try looking at this link http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=107627

It gives you a good over view on how DOs are accepted or not accepted over seas. Also do a search on this forum as this topic has come up many times. Good luck!

wow that is a great resource...thank you so much

Does anyone have any reasons not to go DO in this case. In other words, does anyone have regrets about going DO? I know that I am in a DO forum, but if there are any downsides I do not know about it would be a great help.

I think you have no dilemma here. Why would you forsake the chance to be a DO and get all of the extra teaching in the form of OMT. You are right, DO is the future of medicine and we are starting to slowly but surely take over main stream medicine. A DO degree is more valubale tna an MD as you get more for your money. YOu can still practice virtually anywhere in the world. DO's are afforded equal if not more respect than MD's. There is no question here. GO DO.....it is the future of medicine.

Despite what temple says they are still having accredidation issues. Why risk your loans especially when jersey's school has a better reputation.

NIce post. Another great point. If you are going up against a Temple Grad for the same job/residency you will get the position over them. Do's are courted very heavily by most top flight residencies and private practices. If you go UMDNJ, you have a golden ticket to make it big, if you go to Temple, you risk not being able to be licensed in the US (becaseu it is basically an unacreddited medical school with it's probabtion issues).

GO DO !!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only way to go. 👍

mav3rlck,
I sent you a PM.

thanks everyone, i'll be sending in the deposit today

If you want to be a DO, thats great, but dont start making things up

Good Job. Congrats! UMDNJ has such a great support staff. They have been so helpful to me and I am not even a student there yet! You will love it there. I hope to see you next year!

Yeah, wait a minute here... 😱
I've been accepted to MSUCOM and I'll more than likely attend next year, I'm very proud of the fact that I was accepted by such a great school 😀 , but I have NEVER heard that Temple is on probation much less any of the other things on this thread. If you check the link above, you'll see that Temple is fully accredited by the LCME, this information is completely unfounded. While they may be having other issues, which I do not know about, they are a solid choice in any book and are doing quite well. Many medical schools are having trouble with the state of medicine and health care in this country, but Temple is having no more trouble than Finch/Rosalind Franklin/Chicago Med, which IS on probation and as far as I know, is the only school in such a mire.

Please substantiate such claims before you provide advice to someone making a life decision such as this! If you don't you could definitely cause undue agony and stress if your claim is found false! 👍

If someone can provide substantiated evidence of Temple's probation I would be VERY interested and of course apologize, but I have read nothing of the sort!

Temple was briefly on notice of probation like a year and a half ago, they sent a letter to all their applicants at the time explaining the entire situation, but they addressed any concerns LCME had and they're fine.

Both are great schools, go where you feel right.

I didn't know schools in Canadia were LCME accredited. Thats pretty cool.

as demonstrated by the other posters, you have no idea what you are talking about.

it annoys me when people like you pander to other's fears. 😡 i advise everyone that is unclear on a matter of fact to look it up for him/herself. i did the research and temple is fully accredited by the lcme. according to what is out there they have updated their facilities and increased financial aid, addressing the two reasons they were originally placed on probation. as a result along with plans to construct a new medical school the lcme lifted temple's probationary status. looking at the lcme's website, temple is fully accredited with the next survey to be done in 2008-2009. so lets see, if you enroll this year there is no chance that you will graduate from a non accredited school.
