help undestanding contrast and density

Hi all,
I'm having such a hard time undestandig contrast and density factors and why they get affected by film screen, collimation, SID, focal spot size etc.
Does anybody have an idea how I can comprenhend this subject???
any tips or suggestions will be very welcome

You have got to read Radiophysics. Not once but again & again.
Any decent text would do.
For conventional radiography, I liked Christiansen a lot.
